Those were the two russians that set up the www.paypai.com site to steal passwords. That's not exactly the same as hacking into a site.

Not only did CBS get some details in the story screwed up but they are 5 months behind CNN's coverage of it.

CNN Jan. 16th

Hi,

paypai.com was actually just about two years ago. The fraudsters establised a site to look like it was PayPal to capture email address/password combinations.

PayPal has not been hacked.

It is just another reminder to users to make sure that they need to log in at www.paypal.com ONLY.

CBS has corrected the error.

(Editor's Note: An earlier version of this story said that Pay Pal had been broken into. That was incorrect. Pay Pal itself was not hacked, its security was not compromised.)

Glad that CBS corrected their story. The CNN story was more detailed. The way they were discovered and caught was pretty interesting. The FBI didn't catch those two without some help.

I don't think PayPal has been hacked but....

From some of the stories I have heard some PayPal employees may be making some income on the side....

Should Paypal be responsible for situations where someone hacks an account or acquires a password illegally and then transfers funds through several accounts and then purchases something using a verified account? Who should be liable, the person they purchased something from or the person who initiated the fraud?

acquires a password illegally

What would you consider illegally?

If the password should be taken illegally, paypal should provide the same protection as a credit card. If my password was stolen and used to transfer money, why should I be liable for it. PayPal has the resources to go after the guy, I don't

As a seller I'm not liable as long as I ship to the account holder's confirmed address and I have proof via an online tracking method (and signature for amounts over $250.00.)

This is no different than a stolen credit card. If a mail order merchant accepts a stolen credit card. He isn't liable as long as he can prove he shipped to the confirmed billing address.

This isn't a new concept, and when you think about the requirement and understand it then it makes perfect sense.

The differance here is that with a Merchant account, I have the control of the credit card and can take my own steps to verify the card number to make sure that it is not stolen. With paypal, we do not and have to depend on them. Since we are depending on their fraud protection, then paypal should take the risk.

If I ship and the card is stolen, is paypal really going to follow thier policy or just change it as we have read some many times before.
