I hate to rock the boat here but every once and a while I check the referral bonus section on my paypal account and see all those people whom I have refered to paypal and I shake my head. I haven't gotten a referral bonus since the year 2000. I know for a fact I have been paid by many of those people via paypal-what gives? Even if those people used your service one time to pay someone or one hundred times- why can't I have my $5.00 referral bonuses. I am not a rich person and i sure could use that money. I don't know what you do with that money but I would like to know.

PayPal is all about lying and deceit. I referred several members and didn't get bonuses either. I am now spending a lot of time trying to convince those members to close the account that I once insured them was safe. PayPal is like a bad poker hand and should just be folded.

Hi,

Referral bonuses are awarded if the steps below are completed---

How do I earn a $5 Refer-A-Friend Bonus?

You can Refer-A-Friend in 4 ways. In each case, you will not receive your bonus unless your friend completes each of the referral requirements.

4 ways to Refer-A-Friend:
When you signed up, we sent you an email with a unique referral link that you can forward to your friends. The link identifies you as the referrer. If a friend uses that link to open an account, you are eligible to receive a referral bonus.
If you are the first user to send money to, or request payment from, a friend who is not a PayPal user, you are eligible for a referral bonus.
You can place a PayPal logo in your auction listings. If the winning bidder is not yet a PayPal user and clicks on the logo, you are eligible to receive a referral bonus.
You can place a PayPal logo on your website. If someone who is not yet a PayPal user, clicks on the logo and opens a new PayPal account, you are eligible to receive a referral bonus.
Find out more about our Refer-A-Friend Bonus.

What does my friend have to do?
Your friend must complete the following for both of you to earn the $5 bonus:

If your friend is a US member:

Sign up for PayPal
Confirm their email address
Confirm a checking account
Add $250 or more by electronic funds transfer into their PayPal account
Sign up for a Money Market Fund

Ok 4 steps- why? For some people who only buy every couple of months or so on ebay and spend maybe $15 to $20 a time- it does not make sense to open a money market account or tie up $250 in their paypal account- why so greedy? If it is 4 steps they have to do so we can get $5 shouldn't we get a $1.25 a step they complete- most people must do all but the money market account- or am i wrong. I am sure you guys get a kick back either way right. You take a fee from every transaction- right? I haven't spoke with a another seller in a long time who even gotten a bonus. What are the percentage numbers of those people we refer to paypal that never complete all your rules and what is the percentage of those who do?

Hi nharmon,

The referral bonus criteria is in place to reward users that meet certain requirements. The referral bonus is a promotional item designed to award based on the steps being followed. All steps have to be completed for it to be awarded.

I don't have access to that kind of information (percentages awarded, etc.), nor could I release it because we are in a quiet period.

Damon, you know me, and know I've been a Paypal supporter for a long time, and know I signed up for Paypal back in it's early days.

That said, I haven't received a referral bonus in a couple of years. Frankly, it's useless to refer anyone to paypal, and have any hopes of getting the bonus. There are just too many hoops new Paypal users must jump through to qualify.

When the referral program first came out, and the criteria were not as stringent, I received many.

It's just one more instance of Paypal changing the rules after instituting a program.

I've gotten to the point where I don't expect much out of Paypal, and count on their changing the rules, or going back on what they said sooner or later.

First it was the "always free" statements. Then it was the referral bonuses, then the fact paypal was going to become a bank. Then the X-com fiasco, then you go back on what you told me about merchant accounts, now I get the flack about the preferred program.

Frankly, Paypal is begionning to turn me away from being a supporter, and starting to make me a detractor. I'm starting to see the point of some of the anti paypal posts.

Paypal needs to work at earning my trust back, as well as others.

Paypal is running in the red, if you want to reverse this, the first step is to start treating long term users better.

Welcome to the darkside. It's tough to be a paypal detractor so make sure to gird your loins.
Still gurding,
dendude
