Normally if some is valued over $75 or $100, I do the label on ebay/paypal and then take it to the post to have it scanned in.
Today I was told by the clerk that they were not "required" to do that. My regular post office never says a word and gives me a receipt but this was on the other side of town (no receipt).
I told him that it only gets scanned when it is delivered so if it get lost what proof do I have that it was sent? He said I would have the online information.
I insured the package but I still don't see the post office paying a claim if for some reason it got lost and it never got enter in their system.
I can just see lots of less than honest people printing labels, insuring for whatever amount and tossing the label in the trash.

what you can do is to print the shipping label with NO POSTAGE (if you prefer print label than your own handwriting),then take it to the post office and pay for the postage (including the green DC), the clerk will then have to scan it .
But then it would cost you more $$.
It gets worse with overseas shipping,USPS priority medium and large flat rate box may be trackable until it leaves the country, there is no guarantee that the post office of the destination country will scan it and have that information shown up on our USPS track and confirm system.
If it goes to a rural town or a small post office branch with no sophisticated equipment or staff ,our post office has no way to enforce tracking upon another country post office.
If you really want to make sure your package is tracked all the way,you will have to use a private carrier such as DHL,UPS or Fed Exp and they are all very expensive

I think if I spend 15 minutes waiting in line, the very least he could have done is take 2 seconds to scan it without complaints.

I take 2 or 3 package a week to the UPS store for scanning only. They only thing they ever say is if it's a large package, I should let them come get it out of my car for me. Can't see USPS doing that.

USPS is not UPS,they are laying off people and closing offices.
And UPS is more expensive.
My postman picked up some packages yesterday and took them back to the post office.
Now I can see with domestic packages both priority and first class mail, they are scanned at our local post office and scanned at sort facility .
But the first class package going to New Zealand shows nothing,it does not even show it was scanned at the local post office.
So may be it depends on which post office you are dealing with.

Now I have second thoughts on using USPS for overseas shipments.
USPS said it cannot force the foreign post office to scan incoming priority packages, especially at the last step where the mailman is out delivering packages.
Back in Nov 2011,I sold an item to a European buyer and he said he did not receive it.
I sent him a claim form twice and never hear from him.
4 months later,he filed a chargeback with his credit card issuer,Ebay and Paypal buyer protection is only good for 45 days, but credit card chargeback can be as long as 3-7 months.
Now it is sent by USPS priority small fixed rate box so I understand there is no tracking.
But I also shipped to South Korea USPS priority medium flat rate box which is trackable online,it shows it has cleared customs on March 12,2012,and no more progress shown.
So it could be the Korean mail man delivered the package since it does not need to be signed for,he does not have to do anymore, may be he does not even have a handheld scanner, how many postal carriers in foreign country carry a hand scanner and scan Ebay packages like mad????????

I have never requested scanning items at the PO. From my experience, I think it would be a waste of time to stand in line and have them scan things at the post office. I leave my packages at the counter and have never had a package lost in 12+ years. I have shipped less and less via USPS, mainly small 1 pound items or international. Everything else is via Fed Ex that I take to our Fed Ex/Kinkos down the street. They give me a receipt each time and I rarely have to wait more than a few minutes.

Shag,
When Fed Exp at Kinko gives you a receipt, what does it say?

I have had shipments lost so I don't want to take a chance if it's over $75.00.

I've had 2 or 3 items never make it with USPS and many more than that never updated on the DC.

It sounds like your post office is not doing its job.
You should call the 800 number and report it,USPS takes theft seriously,no one wants to steal and lose their job and benefits these days.
Years ago I used to go to the post office daily and get to know the clerks at the counter.
Once I turned over a package which is clearly marked
Fragile in several places, the clerk just threw it in a hamper .
When I complained, she said 'you aint see nothing yet, this is just the beginning'
I called the 800 number and reported the incident, she heard from the post office!

2 or 3 items over 12 years isn't really so bad - but if I insure it and it never gets scanned then I doubt they will pay. I think I recovered on 2 of the items but I didn't do the labels online back then.
UPS on the other hand lost a 10 light chandelier - they delivered during a hurricane in an evacuated area. It required a signature and they didn't get one.
Next they lost a 25"x25"x30" chair.
They paid both claims but really how do you lose something that big.
