Can someone tell me how to tell the difference? I have 3 figurines, and I have no idea what they are made of. I have a beautiful buffalo figurine that looks like china or pottery, but I have to be sure before I list.

My experience is that resin, which is usually made in a mold, is "smoother" than china, and perhaps a bit heavier than its size would warrant. Could be wrong. If you can post a photo here, maybe we could help you. Are these figures marked anywhere?

No, they are not marked

They all have rough coats, but the buffalo has very smooth horns.

Well, I can't tell from the pictures! Sometimes clicking my wedding ring against an object tells me more--the china would have a clearer "ping," and the resin would sound a bit duller. (Hard to describe, LOL.)

The easiest way that I've found is to turn it over and look at the base. Any marks that look like it has been sanded tell you it's not china (pottery Porcelain).
Also, the fine detail of the coats is a giveaway. Resin can be cast with much finer detail that clay.

They are both made of alabastrite.

max40: The bottoms are covered, so I can't tell that way. I think the buffalo is china, not sure about the dogs.

The bull does look ceramic but it's really hard to tell from a photo as stated. You could always do the dreaded pin test. I would click them on my teeth and see how they feel. I do that all the time with jewelry.

Alabastrite is a product line name for polyresin items.

Looks like Alabastrite to me too.

Thanks buyhigh, I thought they probably were resin. I found out that they are made in England by Country Artists.

resin is much heavier than porcelain.
Also knock on it,porcelain should be hollow inside.

Actually I have a collection of very old Japanese Porcelain sleeping cats which are extremely heavy and feel solid with a single very tiny firing hole on the bottom.
