My bro-in-law has bought from China several times no hassels at all with their purchases.

I've bought from and sold to China since the early 80s without too many problems. Helps if you can speak and/or read the language or have a chinese friend to assist with your business as you'll get much better prices aka "local" prices and not "Gweilo" (foreign devil) prices

Are you talking about buying from Chinese sellers on Ebay ?
There is usually more of the same where it comes from,so if you ask them to find you more and give you a better price, they will be happy to oblige, just make sure you communicate well with them.

What about the inflated shipping charges I see? They seem to start a lot of their jewelry auctions at under a dollar and want $15.00 or more to ship an item that weighs less than 5 oz.

The charges are not inflated. They are generally shipping EMS and those are the costs. It's an express service that gives them tracking.

Thank you all for your comments... I will take the leap... communicate WELL what I want and let you know what happens. I am speaking of ebay sellers... I do not have any knowledge of the Chinese language nor do I know anyone that does.... would help I'm sure.I have read all the feedback carefully ... on the sellers I am looking at... I have also read the buyers feedback. We'll see I will spend a bit check it out and go from there.

I have received packages shipped EMS ( with tracking) from Japan that weighed between 1 and 2 lbs and shipping charges were about $21.00 or $24 so why should a tiny package under 8 ounces be $15.00 or even the $25.00 I have seen shipped from China? I would question that these are the actual costs.

Because just like with the US based international express packages, there is a base price.

Did you really think there was a service that provided 3 day shipping from China for $1.99?

shiping is expensive in China, their post office is not reliable and they prefer to use UPS and UPS rates are high in China.
Any of the private carriers which have offices in China have high rates/
In some cases, they would need an export license and pay export tax.
The Ebay sellers are making money on shipping, how can they make anything on 99 cents after Ebay and Paypal fees??
Most of what they sell are new and mass produced, you are better off buying them here, instead of paying one dollar plus 15 dollars shipping, you would be paying say 3 dollars wholesale and 5 dollars retail in your city.

Darn, I have to agree with whawha. Who knew?

I see these types of Chinese jewelry imports at every low end to high end flea market -- you may want to experiment, pick some up locally and see if these will sell in your shop before you go buying from China itself.

If you do decide to shop on line, make sure you get the correct measurements: I looked at some cloissone beads, which turned out to be 3 millimeters. They looked WONDERFUL in the seller's photo but if you don't know how big 3 mm really is to the naked eye, you may be in for a surprise.

And if you don't want hassles in overseas transactions, perhaps you need to contact those Chinese Amish in Lancaster, PA.

I often buy movies from there, even with shipping you save $$$ over what the sellers in the US want, you just have to put up with chinese characters on the covers. Not a problem with me.

I just bought some Frontline Plus from Hong Kong, cheap shipping and free chop sticks to pick any fleas it doesn't kill off the cats. I hope it works better than Revolution, that stuff is a waste of money.

MAH645...I hope you're not seriously thinking about putting that stuff on your pets. It's most likely a counterfeit knockoff, and it could be extremely toxic. There's no way they can import genuine Frontline from the US, resale it and ship it halfway back around the world for a lesser price than you can walk into any Vet office or feed store and buy it for locally. OTOH, the chopsticks for plucking the survivors sounds like a good idea
