Don't know about MBag, but when my daughter graduated she shipped her textbooks home via Greyhound. At the time that was the cheapest way to go. She picked them up at the station when she got home.

Last time I checked M-Bag was for international shipments only. I use it every now and then.

If you are shipping text books to or from a college you may want to check with your local post master about Library Mail. It's similar to Media Mail but has lower rates. I have never used it but from the looks of my Domestic Mail Manual it looks like your medical student might qualify. I'm going into the PO in a little while and will inquire, don't hold your breath though, it's a small PO and might not have a clue what I'm talking about.

Here's the USPS website link to the info. http://pe.usps.gov/text/qsg300/Q380.htm

Here's a basic description:

Generally used by qualified libraries, schools, nonprofit organizations, universities, and museums to mail specific types of Package Services matter that meet additional eligibility standards. Mailable items are limited generally to books, recordings, educational, and museum materials; advertising restrictions apply. Specific mailable items may be sent to, from, or between a school, college, university, public library, museum, herbarium, or nonprofit organization (religious, educational, scientific, philanthropic, agricultural, labor, veterans, or fraternal); any such institution, organization, or association, and an individual who has no financial interest in the sale, promotion, or distribution of the materials. Also, there are provisions for publishers to mail specified items to qualified customers.

Note that it states "Specific mailable items may be sent to, from, or between a school, college, university.....

Kind of vauge with the to, from or statement. Doesn't exactly say that a individual can not ship TO a school. Like I said, it's worth investigating.

Thanks,I will pass that information along,it would be shipping from hospital to hospital, dont know if that qualifies.
But greyhound sounds good, but where the hell is the greyhound station in Manhattan,NYC??
Another way is to look at GREENSHEET and find anyone driving from Chicago to NYC looking for rider to split gas!

The "Greyhound station" is actually Port Authority -- 40th-42nd and 8th avenue I think.

If it's being sent hospitol to hospitol I would suggest having them ask the mail department in the hospitol. They would probably know better than the local PO. Most local PO's only know about the normal over the counter stuff like Priority, Media, 1st Class Mail etc... When you start asking questions about weird class's like Library Mail or Bound Printed Matter Mail you start getting funny looks. Kind of like I did today when I asked They had no clue, but that was no supprise.

what is greensheet? I am curious now. I have to send to boxes of "stuff" to a family member in oregon. Using USPS is costly. I am wondering if there is an alternative for me.

It may go by a different name in your town, here we pick up a weekly paper called Greensheet where your local companies such as auto dealers, discount furniture stores advertise along with personal classified ads selling used washer/dryer,autos,looking for rides, offering rides, movers, car repair etc.
It is free and you can pick up a copy at any convenience stores, restaurants etc.
Another way is to post in Craigslist under that city you are interested in.
When I was in NYC,i have found people who are going south delivering goods and they dont mind earning extra delivering some personal items for you.
