I posted another topic on my dismay with FED EX
ignoring signayure required requests.I put that on the airbill and package and my boxes are still being left unattended at peoples doorsteps....
FEDEX claims the people have a signaure waiver
and a signature is not required...
Anyway,I sold a pricey $2000 camera on ebay and the buyer lives in a rural area and at least has stated beforehand that couriers tend to just leave stuff and sometimes it gets stolen.
So,I was wondeing if there is a courier that will not do that and will get a signaure.
Also, for those that use the Post Office alot,do I need to send this parcel registered/insured,wrap it brown paper and use brown tape ?
I'd also like a "Restricted delivery" where only the addressee can sign for it.
Is the restricted deliver a special form ? I don't think I've ever seen one at the Post office.
What's the difference of sending regular priority with insurance or registered with insurance ?
THANKS!

Hello -
Yes, I have heard the both Fed-Ex and UPS will let the receiver over-ride your desire for delivery confirmation.
I believe that fully Insured Priority Mail, with Signature (hot pink form)Delivery Confirmation will be your best bet, as you can use the USPS Priority boxes and tape; or you could go Insured Express Mail.
Neither one of those of those USPS services will let the Buyer override your request for a Delivery Signature. If the Post Office can not find someone at home to get a signature, or if it is a Rural mail box drop, they will leave a notice for the buyer to come in and get the package.
I have used both the previous mentioned USPS services in 'difficult delivery' purchases, with satisfaction.

I agree with nanntique. USPS with signature delivery confirmation is a very secure way to send the package. I know our postal carrier quite well and she knows our "secret" spot for putting packages when we are gone. She will leave those with the regular delivery confirmation. However, she will not leave the others especially registered. Send registered if that makes you feel more comfortable. Either way, if the recipient is not home, they must go to the PO to pick the item up and show ID.
Congratulations on your great sale! I'm truly glad to hear that someone is selling something!

Certified Mail - Return Receipt requested n USPS mail should insure that you do get a signature. The bidder will probably have to go to the post office to pick up and show ID.

Certified mail does not provide ANY insurance!
This is a $2000 item!

certified and insured is cheaper than registered and insured.
USPS express delivery also requires buyer signature,if delivered to a hi rise,it cannot be left with doorman with him signing for it,it must be delivered to that particular suite or unit and signed by the buyer.

My doorman at my condo and my condo office sign for all of my packages insured and express packages. Sometimes the mail carrier signs and leaves them with the doorman or receiving.
I get about 3-10 a day for my business and all are highly insured.
Since the package is fragile,I'm going to send it registered with insurance.
Hopefully they'll be less inclined to use it as
a basketball or small stool.

Eye - I did not mention insurance because your question seemed to be about insuring that the intended recipient picked up the package and that was the specific issue I was addressing.
Insurance is a different matter purchased seperately.
Thank you for the clarification and in the future I will not bother.

If you send via Federal Express or UPS, no matter what you request, the final delivery is still in the hands of the driver. Some will do exactly what they're supposed to, others will not.
.
.If you take out insurance, then you're covered. If someone has a signature waiver, and there is a loss, then that's a loss that they've agreed to accept by way of signing the signature waiver.
.
.If you want to be totally safe, the way to go is USPS REGISTERED with insurance. This is safer and cheaper(on items over $500) than priority with Insurance.

jeweler prefers usps registered mail instead of private carrier as registered mail is logged every step of the way.

Double box it, when I went to pick up my hasselblad at the PO (registered, insured) they dropped it, right before he got to the window.
Well, two years later, it still works like a charm.
Of course, I am a big fan of double boxing.

I fully agree with Japerton. Double box for anything that expensive & fragile. Another idea that I have used for highly fragile items is wrap them in the rubber that they use in carpet padding. It really works great.

Fedex has an option to over-ride the customer signature waiver at delivery.
I would use Fedex long before USPS on something this expensive. but then again, last time a shipped something that expensive, I didn't even request a signature. (it was residential so it was optional)

If your asking for a vote, I vote for USPS with Delivery Confirmation, Insurance and required signature confirmation...

I shipped the camera registered with insurance and Signature confirmation with a return receipt.
Delivery confirmation is not good enough.
It's just scanned and people can say they didn't receive something.
Signature confirmation has online tracking and they PO has to get the recipients signature.
