Since I mentioned this in a previous thread, I may as well post it as a question. I often have a hard time determining if a piece is glass or porcelain. Any easy way to tell?

Muriel: I certainly don't profess to be a porcelain expert. However, one quick rule of thumb is to hold the piece up to the light. If you can see light through the walls or bottom of the piece it is likely to be porcelain.
Ceramics or china material has a thicker, non-transparent look and feel to it.
Glass is neither ceramic or porcelain as it is made from different materials and processes than ceramics (china) or porcelain. (Ceramics and porcelain are made from a clay-like slip, then fired in the kiln with various glazes. Glass has a quartz and sand mixture and is fired at extremely high temperatures. Also, glass can be scratched with a diamond pointed scribe with a very distinct mark.
