is this a rule? I got a package in a priority flat rate envelope returned that said that "once use tape should be by the weight", postage due 1.10$
What kinda BS is that!! Could someone verify that? I taped the address label, and also the envelope flap too.

It is USPS BS. Flat rate means flat rate. Postage should be $3.20 max and taping is recommended at the USPO Web Site. Take it back to your PO and if they don't agree with us on this, ask to see a supervisor.

The flat rate means that anything that can fit in the envelope as it is originally configured gets the flat rate. If you have modified the envelope to get more to fit in it than usually would then they charge you by acutal weight, rather than the flat rate. If you just simply taped it to prevent it coming open, that shouldn't be a problem. But if you taped it so as to get something very large to fit in it, then that's the problem.
I agree, take it to the P.O. and see what their explanation is.

You are allowed to put tape over the foldover closure at the top; you are also allowed to affix tape over your mailing label.
But, you are NOT allowed to put tape elsewhere, not ever; many individuals put tape all the way around, both horizontal and vertical, in order to make the FLAT RATE Envelope strong enough to hold a very very heavy item.
This is NOT allowed.
What ever you can fit into the envelope and self-seal, WITHOUT EXCESS EXTRA TAPINGS is the only legal use of the FLAT RATE Priority Mailer.

radh is correct. Use of tape to seal a Priority Flat Rate isn't allowed. If tape is used the postage converts to actual weight. Give the sender a piece of your mind and tell him he owes you for the postage.

avalon: that is not what I stated.
One is allowed to place tape across the sealed top of the Flat Rate Mailer --- AFTER you have normally sealed it.
macandjan: I've always wondered if sheets of heavy metal would work out okay in these mailers. LOL!

ok then. You're wrong. If you tape across the flap of the envelope you are changing its structure. You then convert it to standard postage.

if the glue on the flaps was worth a hoot
you wouldn't need to put tape over it
I say raise a fuss, if the tape was just to make sure their glue held

Seems that if one were so inclined, one could just put the tape on the INSIDE of the flat rate envelope.

I only taped the envelope flap and the mailing label, nothing else....the package is NOT bursting out, it is not strained, and it is a stinking 3 ounces over 2 pounds. gRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!
