I just posted this but it is not showing up so I am trying again. If there winds up being two of them, that is why.

I was checking through the button listings on Ebay and discovered they now have thumbnail photo's showing up by many of the listings on the search page. Anyone know how they are doing that? Is it a new service? I couldn't find anything about it on Ebay.

Ting tang walla walla bing bang!

What is a button listing on ebay?

I speak English, sorta----wanna help but don't have a clue what you are talking about.

Elabor------ate! Thanks!

edited to add--lindajean--are you speaking of the gallery? For an extra quarter--ebay will list your item in the gallery. that is sorta a lazy man's way of scanning a certain category by picture only. It has had some great results for me--is this what you are talking about?

OK, I buy and sell buttons on Ebay. I was checking under the category for Buttons and that was where I found the thumbnail photo's showing up on the listing pages. Pretty neat, and I know they have just started putting them there because I check these out daily. I am assuming they are showing up everywhere, just don't know how the people are getting them there. Is it a gallery thing? Is it tied to Ebay's photo hosting? Or is it something new? I couldn't find anything about it on the Ebay Help pages.

I feel like I am still talking in circles but don't know how to explain it any better. Maybe you can copy this link to the pages I was referring to and see what I mean?

http://listings.ebay.com/aw/plistings/list/all/category115/index.html

Unfortunately they do not show up on the regular search page listings, just the category listings page.

Well, I saw this thing comin' outa the sky, witha one big horn anna one big eyyyyyye...

That's for jeanyu

Now to LindaJean from AnnieJean - I'll try to answer your question.

I think you are referring to the thumbnails from the gallery listings. To get the thumbnails to show up you have to pay and extra 25 cents listing fee and click to have your item listed in the gallery.

On the eBay 'Sell Your Item' page you have to click the little radio button that says to include your item in the gallery, then you have to type in the url of the image that you want to appear in the gallery. For this feature you pay an extra 25 cents, and that is what brings up the thumbnail picture in the listings.

On a listing without the thumbnails you just type one image url. For a gallery listing you have to click the radio button that says to include your item in the gallery (the default is to NOT include the item unless you specifically request it.) You then have to retype the image url in the gallery listing box.

eBay updates the Gallery once every three weeks (just kidding - about every 12-14 hours it seems) so the images don't always show up right away when you do a search for them in the gallery. (Tsk tsk on eBay for this slowness - sellers pay for this feature and then have to wait and wait and WAIT for it to be activated.)

To have the thumbnails show up you need to be searching for items including gallery listings. (Which means that you have selected the pulldown menu that shows 'all items including picture preview.' when you do your search for listings.)

Hope this makes sense and sorry for the length of this post. I will check back later to see if this has answered your question at all.

I thought it might be tied to Gallery, but Gallery has been around a long time and these are just now showing up on the actual listing pages, not the gallery search pages. Is that still what they are doing?

I checked a couple of other categories and they are there on all of them tonight. I swear they weren't there yesterday! It is under the browse by category and then just click on one and you will see lots of little photos out beside the listings.

lindajean I just checked your url out and you are searching and have the tab "All items including Gallery preview " checked rather than just using the "all items" tab. That is why you are seeing the gallery photos in the listings.

I am disappointed. It would have been a great feature and one I would have actually agreed to pay extra for -- Only if everyone saw them every time they did a search!

Oh well, thanks for explaining it to me labbie1.

This is a new feature as you understand it to be LINDAJEAN.

If you use a gallery image it know shows up along the side of the item when you search in that particular category. This started on Friday I think. Its a great idea and makes for searching through pages and pages much more fun.

Well I saw this thing coming out of the sky,
It had one long horn and one big eye!
I commenced to shakin' and I said ooo-wee
It looks like a purple people eater to me

CHORUS:
I said: "Oooo Eeee, Oooo Ah Ah,
Ting, Tang
Walla Walla Bing Bang,
Oooo Eeee, Oooo Ah Ah
Ting Tang Walla Walla Bing Bang!"

Well, he came down to earth and he lit in a tree,
I said Mr. Purple People Eater don't eat me!
I heard him say in a voice so gruff:
'I wouldn't eat you 'cos you're way too tough!"

I said Mr Purple People Eater what's your line?
He said eating purple people and it suits me fine!
But that's not the reason that I came to land,
I wanna get a job in a rock 'n roll band!

Well, bless my soul, rock 'n roll flying' purple people eater;
Pigeon-toed under-growed, flyin' purple people eater.
He likes short shorts, purty little people eater,
What a sight to see!

Well, he swung from the tree and he lit on the ground.
He started to rock really rockin' around!
It was a crazy ditty with a swinging tune
Wop bop a lula woppa bam boom

Well he went on his way and then what do you know?
I saw him last night on a TV show!
He was a blowin' it out and really knockin' them dead,
Playing rock 'n roll music through the horn in his head!

It IS the gallery listings. BUT, what's changed in the last couple days, apparently, is that when you browse a category, the default is "All items including Gallery," so the pics are starting to show regularly during browsing.

As best I can tell, they don't show when you search within gallery, though.

This is a change- don't think they've announced it anywhere. There was a short thread here at AW on this a couple days ago.

Thanks Magazine_Guy. I noticed it was on the gallery in the list, but I didn't realize this was the new default for Ebay. Interesting!

Since this is the new default, I figured I better start using it. It really can make your listing stand out. And at .25, it's a heck of a lot better deal than highlighting, or even bold.

Anyway, my question is: When you list a gallery pic, is it uploaded to eBay's servers, or is it still served from the original location?

amalgamated2000 It still resides on your server and Ebay includes a warning not to delete the photo from your server or your gallery photo will disappear.

Well, it WAS the default a few days ago. No longer apparently, so check it out before you invest your 25 cents.

As to where the thumbnail gallery image is stored- when I right click any of my gallery images, they show an eBay address.

It still appears to be the default here.
