Someone give me the short version! I missed the paypal info and have been on vacation - from auctions and the message boards. Do we have to upgrade or is it optional. Or is it one of those deals where they tell you if you have to? Logged onto their site but didnt see any info there? Lori!

Don't know for sure if my understanding is correct or not, but my short version is that PayPal is still trying to formulate their policy on that.

I called them on the phone. I was confused because it said selling on any commercial site. When I went to upgrade even though I am not a business and had no tax id number to put in their slot...I was confused because I buy about as much as I sell and I consider myself a trader. When I talked to them on the phone they told me I did not have to upgrade my account if I wasn't a business without a tax id and was buying and selling items on Ebay. Hope that helps.

paypal lied..said free..now charging sellers 1.9% on each transaction&after Oct. 1st, add .25 per item on top of that. Fee not the problem. Scamming is. Go to the site, don't click to find out about the upgrade. If you do, YOU HAVE JUST UPGRADED TO A BUSINESS ACCOUNT! (50)

I have waited 3-4 days since the first announcemnet of this plicy to log on....when I went on today, no menacing message.
I guess that since I buy, sell, and transfer between bank accounts about the same $$ amount (and not a very big one) PayPal has decided I am not a seller. OK by me!
If PayPal DOES decide to charge me a fee, I will INSTANTLY go back to my old ways..cash, check or MO...no sweat off my back!!, worked before, and will work again.

Breaking in on this thread with a related news flash! I just started a thread about PayPal replacement ideas and the moderator locked it!!
I haven't seen any other threads on this subject - what's the deal? I was told to make my comments on other PayPal threads. That means turning the topic around if it's not about replacement ideas.
Boy, oh boy. This is getting out of hand.
Sorry to put this in and change the flow of this thread a little, but that's what AW wants, I guess.
What is going on here?

The link I provided was to a thread discussing exactly that - alternatives to PayPal.
The Moderation team is just trying to ensure the EO doesn't once again become dominated by a bunch of PayPal threads saying the same thing.

What about all the other new threads about PayPAl that are new and NOT locked. Is that because the subject matter isn't a potential loss of PayPal business?
Just wondering.....

Keith
Never said it wasn't eBay related which is why we have kept a number of PayPal threads open.
Bottom line is - it's a no-win situation for us (nothing new with that ) If we leave them open, Users complain. If we lock them, Users complain. Administration has made the decision that we should lock duplicate threads and encourage participation in the existing threads rather than have the EO overrun and it's our job to do their bidding.
If anyone wishes to discuss moderation policy any further, please direct your comments and/or questions to the Moderator's Corner.

Can someone post the phone number to reach Paypal please.
I have looked for it and failed to find it. I would like to talk with them personally and find out exactly what is going on.
Thanks

Lah, if you had not been on vacation you would be no less confused. Here is where we are as I understand things.
If you are a "business" or conduct "e-commerce" you are "required" to upgrade but will not be "forced" to do so because PayPal is counting on your honesty.
As has been typical lately, PayPal has again announced a new policy without having any detailed definition of that policy in place. Therefore we have statements from multiple official sources (board reps, customer service reps, etc.) that share no commonality in information content. In simpler terms, they can't get their story straight because no two people have the same script (or any script - i.e. policy definition).
In this vacuum it has been left up to the PayPal user to determine what it means to be a business or conduct e-commerce by PayPal's definition. PayPal says you won't be forced to upgrade even though it is required for whatever they finally decide constitutes a business. This promise is certain to be as short lived as their previous ones and to be revised as soon as it becomes even slightly inconvenient.
At this time the situation is still fluid. I would suggest that you find a comfortable fence and sit on it. Personally I am waiting for some concrete definitions before I decide the status of my involvement with PayPal. Since I am still using a personal account, and have no intention of paying PayPal any business fees until they define their terms of service to show that I must, I see no reason to change things.
We have to be patient with PayPal, the public response method of policy development and terms of use refinement takes time. After posting a policy that strikes your fancy you might have to wait literally days for enough customer rage to build before you can find out which facets of your changes might need a little polishing.

I will not drink coffee when reading Dr. Beetle's posts.

I never got the upgrade screen.

Okay, furkidmom said ..now charging sellers 1.9% on each transaction&after Oct. 1st, add .25 per item on top of that
Does that mean only if you upgrade to the business account??? I have been using PayPal quite a bit the last couple weeks and have never seen any upgrade screen or anything like that. I'm scratching my head here.

Dr. Beetle: ROTFL. So true, so well put.
Okay, so I'm one of those who WILl be switching to some other FREE service. I'd definitely like a discussion on the alternatives. What have other people chosen? Anyone with any actual experience on these? (Too bad this can't be a separate thread.)

Situation is still not resolved.
They want regular sellers to get a business account but have given several conflicting statements as to what level of sales is a business in their eyes. One statement was if you clean out your closet now and then and sell some things you are OK but they don't seem to want to name a hard number of either auctions or value.
I protested being harrassed about it when I have both a personal and a business account.
I expect to be able to occasionally sell personal items I don't want to mix with my
business stock and offered to close the account if they did not like that. So far they have not told me to do so.

Yes if you are a business or an individual who close many transactions a month (but don't report to the IRS), you should upgrade. If you are just shooting payments to mum or dad or your lawyer, then you don't have to.
