This whole tempest-in-a-thimble is just as useful as this:

Old School Report Cards

Note that students were rated on "Deportment" (eBay's missing a bet there) and teachers actually gave grades like 99 5/16 out of 100.

I totally agree, Merrie. At least with Amazon sales we can see how each buyer rated us. I wish people would make a big deal out of this with eBay. Otherwise, the information is useless as far as helping us improve our methods.

Hey, look at this, from eBay's explanation page for all the types of ratings:

"Note: Transactions in motor vehicle categories cannot be rated on “shipping time” and “shipping and handling charges.” Vehicle shipping is typically arranged by the buyer, so SHIPPING TIME AND COSTS ARE OUT OF THE SELLER'S CONTROL.

Well. . . shipping time is out of MY control too. Right?

I agree Merrie, I would really like to know how I can improve my service. There is nothing I can do about postage rates and delivery time because I mail from Canada, but the other things I would love to know. I look at my feedback, and I see nothing but "wonderful product, fast shipping, great communication, super packaging" etc. etc. So how come buyers are leaving less than 5's? I would love to know if there is something I can do to improve communication, or describe more acurately.

Roadsmith and Amber, thanks, if this is a viable rating system, let us see who left what feedback via the stars, then we can decide whether it is useful or not. If you see feedback from a buyer that only leaves 3 stars for shipping when you know you shipped the package hours after he/she paid, then you know it is bogus and buyers are just clicking anything. If you lost money on shipping due to miscalculation and the buyer dings you on shipping costs, then you know this system is a waste of time. But, if you see consistently lower marks in communication, you might realize you need to be more responsive to buyers.

I am not endorsing this new bit of annoyance from Ebay, I am just saying that if we have the system in place any way, it should be useful to sellers, isn't that one of the purposes for feedback, and the only way that can happen is if you see what individual buyers left. It seems like a no brainer to me.

hwahwa:I am not getting 5's that is my point. The fact that I am getting less makes me wonder why when feedback is so good, buyers are obviously seeing a problem somewhere. If eBay let us see who is leaving the ratings, at least we could ask what we are doing wrong.

Amber - Some buyers simply will not give a "5" unless you absolutely wow them (and it takes a lot to wow some of them). That doesn't mean you are doing something wrong.

This system is as stupid as I have seen eBay come up with. I ship every item paid before 3pm the same day and after 3pm goes out the next day and I have a 4.4 for shipping time. I give eBay 0 stars for starting up this stupid rating.

Does anyone know if it works the same as feedback. In other words, is it just the first transaction that the buyer can leave ratings, or can they do it for every transaction? I have tried to find out, but the information on this strange process is very limited.

The system is stupid. I knew what my actual # ratings were, so after the last feedback from a buyer which was glowing, I checked the actual #s again and they had all gone down. Glowing feedback, but less than stellar star rankings. But, really who cares. It is a stupid system so why worry about it.

Amber,
there is a seller who offers free shipping and she is not getting a 5.0
Ebay bidders are cheap, anything which makes them part with their money, they frown upon .
They understand they have to pay for the merchandise and it gives them something in return, but shipping, what does it do for them??
I ship same or next day and my shipping fee is lower than my competitors, but I am getting a 4.6

Just went to leave feedback for a purchase and see that the stars have been changed to a drop down menu of ratings.

For example, under "How accurate was the item description?" the drop down choices are now: very accurate / accurate / neither accurate or inaccurate / inaccurate / very inaccurate.

Guess it is some improvement over just 1-through-5...

I have received 5 feedbacks today, but my ratings have not changed, so obviously not everyone it doing them. They were all new bidders on my auctions.

My feedback still has stars and no drop down rating. The description of detailed feedback rating still talks about stars!?!

The drop down is for leaving feedback.

Maybe it is a test and not everyone is seeing it.

I still don't know what mine is and I can't imagine caring about it if I did.
