Hi everyone,
I must confess - I have sinned. I had half a lamington (but it was so nice) - but I will get back on track today and I am going for a walk, I will get my daughter to drop me at the shops on her way to work (I can't yet walk both ways, it is too far), and I will walk home. It's about a mile.
I went shopping last night and bought all good healthy fruit and vegies, my daughter told me she was leaving if I start eating cabbage- can't imagine why.
Keep happy and healthy.

I loved the bit about the banana split, makes me feel no guilt now.

I survived my walk and even did close to 2 miles. Mind you if I walk to my mail box and back that is 1/2 a mile long, so maybe I will just have to do that a few more times each day.
Today I didn't walk up the driveway, I climbed through the fence and walked up the paddock and looked at all the fruit trees. I feel bad admitting this, but I haven't walked in the paddock for at least 6mths. I normally drive in and out and occassionally glance over at the mango trees.
Part of my new healthy living plan - take time to smell the roses and look at the fruit trees.
silkmoth, thank you for the link explaining the lamington, I never thought about it being a mainly aussie thing. Vegemite is good too, and pavlova is only for very special people, it is so yum.

I've given some advice to my friends that are overweight in the past ...and they always always always take the advice of their overweight friends. But maybe it will work better here.
first, no...I can't just eat and eat and stay thin...in fact, all my family aren't just overweight, they are obese (medically).
Gaining weight comes easy for me, my first pregnancy was a 60 pound gain. Unfortunately, I used poor methods to lose the weight...but that was long ago.
Success: I am 42 years old, 5 ft. 9 in. tall, and I have weighed between 130 and 138 for the last decade. REALLY! And I eat well.
Here it is ~~~ body type ~~~ diet and then maintenance, also certain exercises that are good/bad for each body type.
How does it work? There are 4 body types, each type is dominated by a gland: Me, I'm a thyroid body type (all my fat is in the middle, thin legs and bottom, heavy midrif), there is the Gonadal (thin waist and thick bottom and heavy low thighs, pear shaped), then there's Pituitary (round, even weight distribution, cherub-like or child-like roundness), and lastly there is the adrenal ( I still have a problem remembering the features of this one, sorry).
Anyway, certain foods and exercises stimulate the dominating gland and a 'fad diet' may work for one person and not for another because of this body type thing.
If you factor in your blood type and the special needs you may have because of that, as well, you can determine what foods are best for you and which ones to lighten up on...
It's probably best to go to the library to get books about it, though there is a little info on the net, but what I've seen isn't very thorough.
Let me go see if I can find a web site...if not, body typing has been used by homeopathic doctors for ages, it's not a fad, and it's very very interesting.

Thanks for the encouragement Femme The weather was much nicer today - still cold - but not bitter. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed a walk with no where in particular to go. I didn't make the mistake I did last night. This time I went out before supper and before it got too cold.
Part of my new healthy living plan - take time to smell the roses and look at the fruit trees.
Nettak I think I'll adopt your new healthy living plan too... I love it.
Virakech I browsed the site for a minute but can't decide on my bodytype. I'm either VERY special or I'm in total denial. Actually, I did find one that seems to fit. It'll be interesting to go in and read the recommendations.
Not paranoid anywhere else but here!

Did you know that it is said that laughter is the best medican. I don't think it cures fat but we sure as heck can pretend it does. This thread gets funnier as it goes along and I often find I LOL through the day when I think about something that has been mentioned or an image of a bike seat going into never never land. It just cracks me up.
My main chuckles today came from trying to work out what type of body I have,(HERE I WAS THINKING FOR ALL THESE YEARS THAT I HAD A WOMAN'S BODY - SOFT AND LUSH!! Apparently not), it could be a Thyroid Type or a Pituitary Type. From what I read it depends on what I eat and my food cravings and the dominant gland. Let me tell you one and all - this explains a lot.
I am mostly the Thyroid Type - I like sweet foods (choc., cakes ect), but I also like yoghurt and fruit as well so this puts me in the Pituitary Type to a lesser degree.
NOW I KNOW THIS IS GETTING LONG WINDED, BUT HANG IN THERE.
The Thyroid hormones create a lively, zippy 'up' feeling - OK that's fine, I'm zippy, I'm up - this I can accept.
Now the Pituitary gland gives a feeling of calm, detachment and mental clarity - NOW all of a sudden I understand my constant confusion - I am only slightly a Pituitary Type so I only get calm & detachment, the mental clarity went to someone else.
mybiddness - Glad you like the healthy living plan. Have you figured out your body type yet???

I think I made a mistake about the Crystal Light!
I went to the grocery store this morning and looked over the Crystal Light. There was no mention of Nutrasweet OR Saccharin at all in it. So, I bought some of the Lemonade flavored. I just mixed it up and tried it - and to my surprise it's actually VERY GOOD!
I had to mix 2 Quarts of water with it - so does that count for my water???
Still walking (only just, the old legs are getting a bit tired) and drinking plenty of water.

Hi, I would like to join the crowd in here!
I have added weight since I started researching Ebay & antique books last spring.
I have been considering putting my exercise bike next to my desk. That way while checking out Ebay, I could be getting a little exercise this winter. Besides having allergies I am hypothyroid so the weight could pile on easily. I just have to figure out what to move out. LabRat4GMOS

I don't usually talk much about work and the folks I deal with but I have to tell this story.
Everyone starts out new on the internet, so I'm not making fun of this customer, just giving an example of my day.
A guy calls in and says he can't get connected on his DSL. After going thru a few steps to try to get him on, he says well it always stops and freezes after the three little people........
he had DSL for 4 months and was using his aol. He thought he was using DSL thru AOL.
The call got worse and worse from there. I showed him how to get on dsl and had him open the internet explorer and he did not even know where to type an address or that you hit enter on the keyboard to get it to go there.
then he kept getting disconnect from ICQ messages and could not get online.......he never downloaded ICQ and didnt know what it was. That part and those messages were very confusing to me. I am pretty new to this dsl support and that threw me.
I finally had to send him to Compaq to do a quick restore and asked him to call us back and we would set everything up again.
That was an hour long phone call with lots of twists and turns and different probs popping up. Must have lost a half lb on that one.

No one has mentioned using exercise videos if you can't go outside because of the weather. Anyone have suggestions for a good video or two that can actually help?

I can't get the hang of exercise just as...exercise. Honestly, I have tried it. Joined Bally's a couple of years ago, even. But dropped it because it is *boring*. I even tried taking along a little walkman so I could listen to a book on tape while exercising...but the headset cord kept getting in the way & it was also awkward to use on some of the machines.
But I have come up with something that works for me. I do movie walks. My favorite movie theatre is exactly 2 miles from my house. I walk there at a good clip (it takes me at smidgen less than 30 minutes) & the trip *to* the theatre is on a slight uphill grade. By the time I get there, I know I have been exercising! Then I watch a movie--which gives a point to the walking. I have a small unbuttered popcorn & a bottle of water during the movie (152 calories/8g of fat due to oil-popping process, but figured into my fat allotment for the day). Then the 2 mile walk home.
During the summer, when our temps were 100+ every day, I did my movie walks in the evening, aiming for the 8pm shows, but now that it's cooler I can "do" matinees

Hi, how is everyone doing now that we are a week into the new year. My biggest problem is that my so called walking partners refuse to go until the sun is high above us and the heat very nearly kills us. So that has left me with little choice but to go it alone and walk by myself early in the morning before it gets too hot. It's not a lot of fun walking by myself and walking seems harder when you are alone.
I have been having a lot of veg. casserole type of meals usually with wid rice. They are filling, nutrious, tasty and low in fat. The best part is you use whatever vegies you like. The heart foundation recommends it as well.
kiki2 I'm not into excerising with a video, but if you find a good one let us know - I might give it a try.

Nettak, where do you live? In my area (Cinci, Ohio) we have to wait until the middle of the day right now, to get some warmth, which makes it difficult for me, because by then, I'm on the move doing other stuff.
My big accomplishment this week is drinking more water. It's not hard, as long as I can remember to do it. I'm starting the treadmill in the next coupla days. I know I shouldn't, but I'm waiting til this PMS thing passes.

Hi cin131 (I hope I got your name right) I am in AUSTRALIA. Beautiful Queensland and it is extremely hot at present. Our winter doesn't start until June officially, and we are hoping for some rain to cool things down. I also am drinking plenty of water, but it does get boring sometimes ( and I like water).

I find that drinking a lot of water goes better for me if it is *cold*. Don't know why, but I can stomach it better than water straight from the tap or that has cooled bck down to room temperature.

Count me in. This board really works! I was sitting here eating pistachio nuts wanting to get away from the Yahoo thing and started reading these messages and I put the nuts away and got a couple of carrots. Ugh.
Since I came down with fibromyalgia I gained tons of weight. My Dr. says I have to exercise even if it hurts. It does! I got Richard Simmons easiest video and I can just about get half way through. I've been looking for one of those thingies that you can pedal while sitting in chair - I don't know if they even make them anymore - and figure since I'm at the computer all day I can peddle my way around the world in no time.
I think the best diet is The Zone Diet. No sweetners of any kind, nothing made with white flour, and some fat with every meal. Starchy vegies are out too. I put no salt, no sugar, peanut butter in oatmeal and it actually tastes good.
Giving up ice cream and pizza is the hardest and I probably never will, just cut back on it.

Count me in too! I need something to motivate me for this new year! Maybe this thread will be it! I currently go to TOPPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly), but have lost my drive...It has helped to to maintain my present fat condition (~smile) because of going for weekly weight-in's but not to lose and keep it off. I am 5'8" and currently weigh 210 and would love to try the ATKINS diet that was mentioned. Any links to the exact "yeses and no's" of the diet would be greatly appreciated and also any menu suggestions for meal planning also. Good luck to all of us in this new year and hopefully we can motivate one another to be healthier. Also on the water that was mentioned, I have found that when I drink water if I add a little slice of lemon or some lemon juice it makes it taste less bland and more inviting. I'm not as good as I should be drinking water at home, but when I EAT OUT (~smile~) I always order ice water w/lemon instead of coke! Think that's a good start?? ~smile~ Lookin forward to checkin in to encourage where needed and gain some motivation and encouragment for myself! Good luck to us all!

HELP!!
I have fallen out of the tree, My good healthy eating plan went out the window yesterday and today I have to convince myself to get back on track. I have lost 3 pounds and I don't want to find it again, I know I still have a way to go before I am trim, taut and terrific again, but 3 pound is a start. I haven't lost any inches unless it is in my big toe .. hard to tell.
How is everyone else going? I wish I could say I felt full of bounce , but I think I need to keep taking my vitamins. At least when I had my doctors check up this week, my blood pressure is fantastic, and cholesterol and everything else is fine. So at least that is a relief. I think my biggest problem is parents. My mother is having heart test, to determine if she has to have surgery, my father is ready to have surgery to save the little bit of sight he has left .. no guarantee it will help, but I guess it is worth a try and my mother in law has a brain tumor and is awaiting surgery in hospital. It sometimes gets too much for me to cope with and this is when I fall out the tree. I don't think I want to get old and frail, it is so sad.
Tell me your good stories to cheer me up. Has anyone anything good happen to them.
posted on January 12, 2001 12:54:49 PMExecutiveGirl, unless they've changed CrystalLight, it does indeed have Nutrasweet in it. The chemical name is aspertame(sp).
I only know that because I have to stay away from Nutrasweet myself, so I read labels alot. There is new stuff out called Splenda that is used in DietRite now and some other products. You can buy it in powder form and cook with it measure for measure like sugar.
I use it in my coffee and sometimes drink DietRite.
I've been reading and posting on alt.support.diet since January 3. I starting exercising again, and am counting calories, 1400-1500 per day. I've lost 4 pounds since the 3rd. I'm using our Stepper 5 x per week for 20 minutes, and using dumbbells and the weight bench 3 x per. Stopped eating all the sugar and junk food too, and I do feel better.
I'll tell you a funny story that happened to me today. I was in a store that sells alot of 'nature' things with a friend. I found this box of 'nature' for $20. I called my friend over to look at it with me, we were marveling that one could sell a small box of pine cones and twigs for $20. She suggested that maybe they were scented. I picked up a pine cone to sniff it and a piece of dried something went up into my nose. Here I am in this very classy store trying desperately to NOT look like I am picking my nose, while I try to get their 'piece of nature' out. She was laughing and snorting hysterically, which really didnt' help the situation at all.

I can't believe I didn't think of this sooner....There is a natural sweetener, it's an herb; It's called STEVIA. I can only find it at health food stores. It tastes a little different than sugar, but it doesn't act like sugar at all. I've been told that diabetics can use it, but I'M NOT SURE. Normally, I would say ask your doctor, but, as this is a herb, they probably won't know. I would check with your local *search engine* and see what you can find.

Nettak: Keep your chin up! We *all* backslide when dieting! And as an accident-prone person, I can certainly sympathasize with your falling-out-of-a-tree incident Now, as for good things, I certainly can't come near to Cin131's story , but here goes: after 2 years, my shy ex-racer rescued Greyhound Merlin is finally coming out of his shell, giving kisses, climbing on the furniture and *demanding* cuddles; tonight at bowling I threw a very rare (for me) Turkey [three strikes in a row], yippee!; on my last scuba dive I finally got down to 100 feet (happy, happy!) and I'm finally getting somewhere with the animal actor website I'm trying to put together.
Look around you, you'll find numerous small "good things" going on, too.

Thank you Cindy for that very funny story, I could actually picture it in my mind and very nearly wet my pants laughing. It was lovely to come home and have something to be happy about.
bunnicula
Thank you for your lovely happy stories.
I am not usually a morbid person and I like to see the bright side of everything. That is my normal nature, but lately I think we have had too much handed to us to cope with all at once. I can't help feel sad to see these once lively people fading away and aging before my eyes. We are talking active people, they all had fairly busy lives and boom all of a sudden illness is there friend and they aged overnight. It is really sad.
We have just been to the hospital to see my mother in law, she is in a lot better spirits than the last time we saw her, but there is a poor woman in the same ward as her and she has had surgery already and it has caused some sort of brain damage, talk about sad, this woman is only in her early 40's at most. I was a bit upset for her because she is in a ward with old people and I noticed that the nurses tend to get a bit snappy with her. She said that she wanted to go to the toilet and they just ignored her, like she was a naughty child. Too bad for them if she just decided to wee on the floor. At least that thought makes me smile.
This has made me all the more determined to get back on track and start living a healthy life, none of us want to end up having a stroke or heart attach because we didn't look after our bodies when we had the chance. So even if we can't lose a lot of weight we can still eat healthy.
Thanks for letting me get that lot off my chest. I feel much better now.
