I was inspired by this thread:

Our shipment schedule is typically next business after receiving online or payment by mail. But I do this all after my full time job and in the evening rushing before the post office closes at 8pm. Is eBay your full time job?

I work 12 hour days at my day job 3 days one week and then 4 days the next and this includes every Sunday. My wife works full time. We run 50+ auctions a week and ship everything next day or better. We are moving up to 100+ auctions a week and will maintain the shipping next day still.

I ship next day on my way to my day job. I would ship next day even if it was fulltime eBay for the simple reason that timewise, a trip to the PO is very short. Besides, this is business and short cycle times are good for business.

I have a day job and I ship next day. I like to move the auctions out because if I didn't I might lose it.

Another problem with not shipping the same or next day is that if I wait a day, I have too much too do in one sitting. I have anywhere from 5 to 12 items to ship each day.

I run 100 - 400 auctions at all times. The wife and I are both retired so we ship six days a week. Keeps us busy.

Wow, your post office stays open until 8PM?
Mine closes at 4 PM. And they don't even have those free Priority Mail boxes half the time.

I've just re-started selling. I teach and there is a brand new PO maybe a mile from school. I'm able to run by there on my planning period.

I work fulltime 9 hr days every other Fri off, ship next day or same day, depending on when I get payment from buyer. Or course, I use Endicia, so I just plop it in the mailbox outside! But, before Endicia, I ran to the Po every day on lunch...

So far all parttimers, and nearly all with day jobs. Give them a chance to do packaging FT and see how fast they get sick of it. Also when they start to depend on profits and sales they may decrease ship days.
The only reason I ship in 2-4 b-days is because I live in earthquake country and I have this concern my items will be swallowed up during the next once in a century 7.8 earthquake, and the buyers, knowing how rude and unconsiderate they are will leave me dozens of negatives and demand refund right away or file fraud charges. Seriously.

Packaging and shipping is donkey work. If I lived 50 miles from the PO maybe I'd reconsider, but frankly there is no excuse to ship infrequently. Every other day is fine if you must, but beyond that it's inexcusable unless you are a part time amateur. This is still a service business.

My wife & I are both full time workers and Full time parents. We ship twice sometimes 3 times a week.
We run 400 auctions each week and have a store with 125 items in it.
We ship 100-175 packages each shipping day.

I work FT from 2:30 to 11:00pm, I either ship at the PO or at work as we have our own mailroom there...I ship next day or same day if I catch the payment in time

We're retired - sort of - still active in our community. If I get four checks or money orders today, I try to get all four items packed up to ship the next day. I'm with some of the sellers here who are afraid they'll either lose the item or an earthquake or grandchild will get it.
Besides, it's easier for me to keep track of things this way. I have a terror of "losing my place" in the rhythm of selling, and this way I can stay pretty organized.
It's also good customer service. I have to add, though, that we have a P.O. box only, and we have to go to our little post office daily anyway, so it's not an extra trip.

I used to advertize that I ship within 24 hours of receipt of payment. When we had twins, I went to shipping once a week... On saturdays only. There was no drop in sales, no complaints about slow shipping. I don't think changing from being a 24 hour shipper to being a 168 hour shipper made any difference.

Again, I applaud all of you who ship the next day. Three cheers to you! What I don't like however is self righteous, holier-than-thou, people who make stupid statements.
Just because that's the way you do it doesn't mean it's the only way or the "right" way.

I ship 2-3 times a week. That sometimes means shipping a day after payment is recd and sometimes it means 2 days after payment. I do auctions Part time from home, run my entire household and entertain my 3 year old who is at home with me all day.

One of the strongest reasons for shipping next day is that this levels the playing field. We are in competition with every other Internet/mail order business as well as the brick and mortar stores who serve our bidders. eBay doesn't exist in a vacuum. People who order through us do not mind waiting a few days in order to get something special or to save money, but the fewer the days the better.
Truth is still the truth even if you don't like my style of telling it. I'd rather risk irritating some readers with reality, than to say to each his own and pat everyone on the head. Business is not nursery school; it's boot camp. In boot camp if you don't like hearing you're out of step, it's not a problem. You get a Size 12 attitude adjustment tool to remind you of the fact.

Couldn't have said it better myself.
I DO do this full-time and I know my situation is radically different from the part-timers. I know what the pressures are of having to pay rent on an office building as well as pay my mortgage, of hiring temp workers to cope with merchandise processing, and of having to worry about whether the city is going to exercise eminent domain to seize my building and force me to move again (at MY expense). These are very real concerns.
The superheated air coming from a smugly ignorant AW blowhard means nothing in the context of my business.

We ship the same day payment arrives or on the very next day. We have a B&M store close to the post office so it is never a problem for us.
But I do wonder about the people that work fulltime jobs for someone else and ebay in the evenings. I admire many of them for being able to ship packages on their way to work or on their lunch break.

"Smugly ignorant"
Let's try smugly ignorant of someone with 30 years business experience. I've run a FULL-TIME business longer than eBay has been in existence. Just 'cause I don't do it full-time now doesn't mean I don't know what I am talking about.
Keep your personal attacks where they belong and stick to the topic which you completely ignored. Or is that how you treat anyone who doesn't agree with you?

"Business is not nursery school; it's boot camp. . . . "
Excellent post, mballai!
One of the sad things about messages on the internet is that we sometimes come across as holier-than-thou when we don't mean to; that's probably why emoticons were invented!
We're all adults here (presumably), and we should be able to tolerate differences, I think. If you can keep your internet business going with not too many complaints or negative FBs, I say more power to you; ship once a week, three times a week, daily, whenever. Some of us get more anxious, I think, when things aren't completed. And some of us have big rooms to work in, independent of the rest of the family. And some of us don't have toddlers underfoot. Your reality isn't my reality.
