I'm hoping someone can help me out with this. I'm both a seller and a buyer and I accept PayPal, no problems yet.
I've recently won two auctions, one of which accepts payment by PayPal. After the auction, I expressed that I would like to pay with PayPal. The response went something like this:

"Sorry, I can't accept payment by PayPal for this auction. I was ripped off once on an international PayPal transaction. I would prefer a MO and will pay for the postage." not an exact quote but the general idea is there.

Ok, I really don't have a problem with that. I got the MO and sent it. MO received and item on its way....quick, easy and the seller felt better about it. I should mention that I am a Canadian and this item originates in the U.S.

I'd like to know why international transactions are risky and whether I should be refusing to accept them on my own auctions.

I prefer PayPal to waiting for an MO or a cheque and then hoofing it to my bank. It's alot easier and my customers can get their items quicker. I should also say that I have never had a bad experience using PayPal

Any advice/explanations would be appreciated.
Thanks

International PayPal transactions are risky because you have no protection. Unlike US transactions where if a customer claims non delivery and tries to disute the charge you can fight the dispute with a DC nuumber, if an international buyer decides to dispute a charge you have no recourse of protection. You are going to lose.

If you have an international buyer that would prefer using their credit card, try reccomending BidPay.com - they will charge the customers card and then issue a Western Union Money Order to you. No charge backs, no hassles : ).

ahh, thanks for answering. It explains the nervousness of the seller I am dealing with. It's a shame that it's that easy to pull a fast one. It kind of erodes the trust that buyers and sellers used to enjoy.

For international transactions, I offer the buyer a discount if they use bidpay or payingfast. The buyer can then use their credit card and I get a guaranteed payment. It's worth it for the peace of mind.

My auctions specifically EXCLUDE any INTERNATIONAL PayPal payments (including APO & FPO) since PayPal offers NO protection whatsoever to sellers who ship outside the USA.

Unfortunately, since the USPS DOES NOT offer DC for APO or FPO addresses, I've had to exclude payments from these addresses

However, since I do offer a choice of:
BidPay Money Orders /or/
PayingFast Money Orders /or/
International Postal Money Orders

for non-USA bidders, I seem to garner a fair share of international buyers without the stress of worrying about PayPal games.
