what the heck is Periwinkle Blue?
Think she'll look like Granny Clampett in a couple of years?
By the way, Dubya's favorite food is peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
This is Camelot....Not.
Weird suit.

I was kind of hoping for spiked heels and a feather boa. Oh well. At least sensible shoes will be "in" for the next four years.

Yuch! With that blue and Rawbunz's pearls she could pass as from Tennessee. Like Nashville.

krs,
I was going to say periwinkle is a cross between blue and lavender/purple but bunnicula I am not fond of the color but it has been the color for a couple of years.
Thanks for the link. I think it was Nancy Reagon who used to order each pair of shoes in at least 2 maybe 3 different sizes because wearing them all day to different functions and on planes etc., her, and other peoples feet, tend to swell. There was mention in the other article that at least one other first lady did the same. It may have been Jackie O. but not positive. I vote yes on sensible shoes IF I had to wear them all day and I like the pair and style that was shown. Wish I could afford a pair.
Call it whatever but I always enjoy seeing what First Ladies wear starting with Jackie O. Now there was a lady with class and the ability to carry it off.
I think Nancy Reagon got in a little trouble for "borrowing" clothing and not returning but I liked to see what she was wearing too.
There were times when I wondered about the style of Mrs. Bush Sr. but to some people clothing is not important and she never failed to wear her trademark pearls. She seemed comfortable and at ease in herself plus the clothing issue I think may have had something to do with all the comments about Nancy Reagon.
There were comments about Hillary's clothing but I enjoyed seeing the variety from formal to pant suits. I thought that sensible when out in -0 weather and just for plain comfort.
I am anxious to see if Laura Bush's style will change. I have never seen her dress for a formal ball etc. but I hope I will. So far her clothing doesn't tell me much except that she is perhaps following her Mother-in-Laws fashion. I hope not because she is can afford to develop a style of her own. I think it will tell how comfortable she is in herself. I am hoping for class and style.
Earth shaking? Nope, but interesting and better than discussing how Ashcroft would look in those shoes. Fluff, probably to some but I find it interesting.
I can say this because I am sitting here in my green insolated type pj's.

IMHO, I think there is only one "sensible"
shoe that should be "in" for everyone! Heel about the same height as the sole, so you are not placing all your weight on the front of your feet. Quality leather (or for vegetarians, hemp or cotton-organic) so your feet can breathe! Laces (or straps) so you can adjust the fit over the foot. A toe box that isn't tight and doesn't squish your toes into painful shapes. These flat shoes wouldn't cause callouses on the balls of your feet or stretch your calves or
hurt your lower back, causing problems all your life. IN OTHER WORDS.... shoes that males, male designers and store owners have selected for themselves for hundreds of years!
In the paper copy of the post, Ms Bush's feet do not look comfortable. You can see what looks like veins popping out on top of her foot. You can see where her left ankle seems to be hanging over the top of her "sensible" pump!
With the weather we are having in the Washington area, the only sensible dress for Ms. Bush on Inauguration Day would be pants and boots. Why not? I am sure all the males on the platform will have on long underwear under their clothing. Why should a woman have to stand with nylon stockings and sensible pumps or high heeled boots. Pants and flat shoes could cover up her designer long johns, keep her warm and cozy and steady on the steps and platform!
As for the Manolo Blahnik, USA Pres. statement: "Anna Wintour [Vogue Ed.] is the typical example of a woman who walks down the hallway in a pair of stilettos, and there's a sense of power that comes from that."..."It is more difficult to achieve that with low, sensible shoes." My question is: DOES THAT MEAN THAT MEN WILL BE TAKING TO WEARING STILETTOS NOW? How did males ever make it to power positions without their stilettos or high heels that command more power! Maybe you males out there who are leaving Ebay for other positions should consider whether you should wear stilettos to enhance your power position!
What a load of crap women have been and are being fed ...by mostly males. I hope women in their 20s and 30s will start reading some fashion history. And then just say "no" to the line of Bu**sh*t that men (and alot of women)in the fashion industry put out.
[Edited to say I started out in the fashion end of the retail business, some of my college courses were in fashion history. After graduation I soon realized that the "fashion biz" wasn't for me. I couldn't take what I was reading historically and what I was reading about advertising deception. And we are still doing it to our daughters now!! Don't leave without your face on in the morning, wear heels that you can't dance in for the prom, wear chemicals to cover up natural body odors, get a face lift at 14 so you can look like a cover girl, starve yourself in the name of looking like some slim plastic walking advertisement....]
I am not having a good morning. Good thing I didn't read that paper yesterday.

kitsch1: As long as there are women stupid enough to wear them, that type of shoe will be made & sold. There are a lot of us, though, who simply look for and buy comfortable, low-heel shoes. I decided very young (before I was 12) that I would *never* wear heels of even moderate height. Why? I saw my mother's feet and those of women her age who had grown up in a time where high heels were de rigueur. Heavy callouses. Corns. Toes bent, squished & knotty--with nails to match. Many, like my mother, had even had to have foot surgery to correct problems caused by heels. But then, women can be incredibly stupid when it comes to "beauty," probably because the concept is foisted onto them from the time they are born.

Periwinkle is one of the prettiest colors of blue, I knew there had to be someone else who liked it as much as me Rawbunzel
We can have a periwinkle lovers support group meeting.
I also love my Doc Martens though, huge rounded monstrosities that they are, a most excellent pair of cr*p-kicking shoes and great support for the feet too.

Periwinkle is a lovely color, but it's almost impossible for most folks to wear without looking like they've got a bad case of jaundice, particularly in January. At least it's replaced mauve (krs - think "veal" as a trend color.

HCQ I happen to look fetching in mauve. Griege and khaki are additional favorites. Seriously us olive-somplexioned girls do look wonderful in mauve. And periwinkle does not make me look jaundiced at all.

rawbunzel and enchanged, I'm sure it's just fine on women with your striking coloring. Try mauve on most Northern European-descent women over 55 with grey hair - which seems to be the age bracket at which this color was most aggressively marketed some years back - and you get one continuum of bland color from head to foot, as if the poor soul had been doused with a sackful of "rachel" face powder or had pulled her orthopedic hose over her head.
Hey, I am a fan of periwinkle myself; it's just a difficult color for most folks to wear and is a nightmare to decorate with in any room with other than a southern exposure. I bought a honking big tanzanite some years back, which I just gave to my son for his GF; we put it in Aunt Minnie's old Tiffany solitaire ring, which is a pink gold. Looks a lot better on GF than it ever did on me.
I am an "autumn" myself (strawberry blonde, very fair) and have always gravitated toward earthtones. They are probably the most flattering on me of any colors, but I chose them for me and for our home for more practical reasons: they hide animal footprints, blood, and Alabama clay stains.
