So I see.
But I'll bet you haven't been patted on the head and told to go get the "mister" so it could be explained to him...
That almost escalated into an international incident.

Although we've had our share of difficult contractors...heck, we couldn't even get one to show up at our house to give us an estimate on a 60' retaining wall...we've also had some pretty great ones, too. I actually found an honest auto mechanic. Sorry, but I cannot reveal his identity or location!!

May you have the joy of Sears and Firestone to work on your car. Big businesses and according to you your pals. Used batteries sold for new and delaminating tires. Of course they rushed to let us know and to fix it for us......Airlines are another great big business. I am just scared now that they can hold you captive on the runway for 8 or 10 hours they may figure out they can ask ransom to let you go.

Marwin, in some countries women do not have the same status as men. A contractor in such a country may not take a woman's opinion, instructions, or criticism very seriously. Said contractor may even patronize a woman, patting her on the head and telling her to get her mister or husband so that a dialogue may proceed on more "equal" terms. Shadowcat has lived in many foreign countries. She is an American woman. American women have no real appreciation for foreign cultural norms.
....and you seem so bright at times.
Sorry about that, Shadowcat. I hadda do it.

Ah, marwin... is Uranus in your mouth this month? Is your uterus rising??
Actually, I enjoy the expanded deluxe edition of your personality here at AW; your (w)impishness was circumscribed on the old DNF...

Ok, back to your topic.
I not too sure you would feel the same way about contractors in general if you had a good understanding of the value of their work. I suggest you do your homework before you decide to invest in home repair or improvement. Books, videos, TV, and the internet will provide you with innumerable tips to avoid getting ripped off. You may even learn to perform many small home tasks yourself.
I still don't understand where the priest fits in this picture. Does one provide you a service that would cause you to imagine him thinking How much can I screw this idiot for ? And what problem do you call him over to solve?

Xardon: Exactly. It was fortunate that the contractors didn't speak English or I would have run afoul of the "no insult" law.

I don't know that one of those big companies would come to my house on a Saturday, pick up my 4x4, repair it, bring it back, and let me pay them when I get down that way like my mechanic Mikey does...often
All those companies named charge ridiculous prices, and are ripping you off in your face, instead of behind your back.
I support the local merchants.

Xardon - I'm an American woman, however I haven't traveled extensively nor have I lived in foreign countries.
I knew exactly what Shadowcat was talking about and how she felt what that happened to her. If that attitude is typical of foreign cultural norms, then I and a lot of other American women understand completley.
Some of us have endured that patronizing treatment right here in the good ol' USA quite often. Unfortunately, we know it's still gonna happen, and we still have to fight that battle (or get another contractor which is exactly what I would do).
