When I was younger and still lived at home, I used to bake tons of cookies for Christmas. I was the family baker and everyone looked forward to my 3-4 days of baking every year. Well, this is the first time in 6 years I've had time to do it. So I decided to bake up a storm this year. I got the cookbooks I needed (thank goodness for eBay!) since Mom's are packed away.

I got the books, got my supplies and made up my mixes. I was all ready to go, had the first batch made and on the cookie sheets. I went to put them in the oven and it wasn't hot yet. Three hours later, still not hot. AAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGG!

So the past two evenings I've been baking them, a half dozen at a time, in the toaster oven. I might get done by New Year's...

The repairman comes Thursday, wish me luck! (Good thing we'd already decided to have steaks on the grill for Christmas dinner eh? )

LOL Mouse, I feel your pain! In a burst of housewifely enthusiasm, I planned cookies, etc., and programmed the self-cleaning oven to get everything sparkly clean so my cookies wouldn't smell like bacon. Well, about halfway through the cycle, the panel went bonkers and flashed a message that I can't find in my manual, and the locking oven door has stayed locked for four days now. Repairman is supposed to come today...

What is this, the revenge of the ovens? The bottoms of my cookies are getting too crisp while the rest isn't getting baked. I have tons of cookies to bake plus date nut bread.

I've also thought of using my toaster oven or going to buy a convection oven. Has anyone ever used one of them?

My stove can't be repaired anymore it's too old. My broiler hasn't worked in a year. I love my stove. It's one of those vintage Wedgewood's with the shelf and the grill in the middle.

chococake, if you can possibly afford it buy a "convection microwave". We've got one by Sharp, one of the earliest models (had it 2 years now) and although it cost $450 at the time it was a very, very good investment. It's big enough to do a small turkey and has the advantage of having a combination convection/microwave setting, which means that you can do a full roast, really roasted rather than merely nuked, in about 1/3 the time, and the baking and broiling are SUPERB (and don't heat up the kitchen in summer). I've done everything from puff pastry to piecrusts with the convection setting and it's great!

My mom just got one this year in an over-the-stove, under-the-cabinet model. When we bought ours you really had to hunt for 'em, but I understand they're more common now. Do it!

Thanks HCQ I'm seriously going to look into them. I knew I should have kept the one that was in a storage unit I bought. Darn! It was new old stock still in the box. It was only a few months ago too.

mouseslayer,

Anyone who is willing to bake 1/2 doz. cookies at a time in a toaster oven should be rewarded for perseverance.

It is my understanding that Sears considers ovens a priority prior to Thanksgiving and Christmas.

They service all models, regardless if you bought it from them or not.

Call this number 1-800-4my-home (1-800-469-4663). They should ask for your address and phone number and then it will be routed according to zip code.

Good luck!!!

Hi mouseslayer, femme, chococake and ^^

After reading of your experiences I have decided that I am just going to put and 'OUT OF ORDER" sign on my oven. No sense tempting fates.

I am also going to say that due to the above I really wanted to make all those Christmas cookies, breads and pies BUT due to the possibility that my oven has been zapped by a virus from a thread at AW, I can no longer bake the goodies.

Works for me.:lol

Well the Sears guy just left...and I'm still ovenless. Turns out a horribly expensive widget needs to be replaced, and this particular widget is so expensive and so rarely goes bad that they don't carry it in stock. Won't be in until next Tuesday--no cookies can be baked, but that's okay, I won't have to mess up my diet until I go to someone else's house. And besides I'm doing a semi-happy dance, because for once the extended warranty I purchased is going to pay off BIG TIME. His non-successful visit today would've cost more than the whole policy cost, and the widget he's replacing would probably buy me a new ordinary stove. This one had so many bells and whistles that I figured it was worth the extended warranty...whew!

pysllie,

I am so glad you had that warranty.

I don't know how many different vehicles to household items we have had that we don't hear the phrase, "If it had been any other model than this particular one, it would would only have cost a few dollars ..."

Maybe you can't bake but just look at the money and energy you saved. Merry Christmas.

psyllie,

It is always a horribly expensive widget that rarely goes bad and is never in stock. I think it's a rule.

Sorry networker all ovens on this thread have a virus. Because you posted here now your oven has it too. LOL

Tomorrow I'll give all my cookie fixin's to my daughter-in-law. Everyone might be happy about this because now I'll have more time to make those Polish cookies that you deep fry. Hey, networker, seeing as you're in Chicago you could go to a Polish deli and buy some. They look like bow ties covered with powdered sugar.

b]chococake[/b]: We have an old Sharp convection/microwave. It's like a tank in the kitchen, but I recommend them! We've used ours constantly for 10 years now without problems.
