When I first got Windows98 and I would save a picture in "my documents" and then if I wanted to look at that pic I would go into "my documents" and click once on the pic and it show a small image of that pic and also the size of it over to the left of the page. I somehow have accidentally made a change in what format the pics are saved in (if that's the right way to word it) and I cannot click once to see the preview but also when I click to open the pic it takes about a minute for the pic to show up and then when I hit "file, close" or hit the X button to close it out it takes a minute or so for the picture to close. Does anyone know how to get the pics back the way they originally were? (I have all of them saved as jpg).

This should help, or at least put you on the path.
1. Using Windows Explorer, get to the window where you can see your file ("my documents" or whichever file you have pictures in". Click once to highlight the file -- do not open it.
2. After highlighting, go up to the File button in the left-hand corner, go down and select "properties". Check the box marked "enable thumbnail view". Then hit "apply".
3. Go back to the file you highlighted and open it. Then go again to the top of the screen and open "view", scroll down and select "thumbnail". All pic files, regardless of format should now appear in miniature form.
You may have to go back and forth with it a couple of times, but you should see the steps pretty quickly.

What "format" did you switch to? It may be that you "Saved As" Bitmap, which will be HUGE...So, you might need to bring picture up with your photo editor, and do some re-sizing...If you want pics for AW, I would suggest you stay with JPEG.

To get the pic and info to appear on the left, when you have the folder open, open the view menu and check "as web page". That'll do it for that folder.
If you want it to work for all folders, then after you get your current folder the way that you want it, select "Folder Options" from the view menu, then select the view tab and press the "Like current folder" button and all folders will work like your current folder.

Thanks so much everybody for taking time to help. I clicked the "as web page" option and got the description over to the left of the page, but it still doesn't show a small version of the picture like it used to. That area is just blank. I have all the pics in jpg. I think where I screwed up was when somebody sent me some pics via email and when I went to open it, it asked what program I wanted to open it with, and when I chose "picture viewer" it changed every one of the pics that I had over to that. I just can't get it back the way it was when I first got windows98.

Is "Picture Viewer" the name of your Photo Editing Program? That's what I believe the screen was asking, like KODAK, or PSP or ADOBE...
Can the person resend the pictures???

Maybe off the subject, but I understand there was one of those sun-caused electrical glitches in our atmosphere today that caused a lot of computer problems.

Hi bobbi355. I'm using Win98SE and I think it's similar to Win98. Try clicking on the VIEW button at the top of your screen and select FOLDER OPTIONS and then FILE TYPES. Find the icon for your photo software and edit it to include .jpg, .jpeg, etc. and set it as the default. Make sure the icon that's displayed matches the one for your photo software.
