Hillary Clinton Filing for Presidential Run Not all It Seems By Jeremy Reynalds Talon News October 8, 2003
WASHINGTON (Talon News) -- While New York Democrat Sen. Hillary Clinton has repeatedly said that she is not running for president in 2004, efforts by her supporters continue as paperwork has been filed with the Federal Election Commission in support of a presidential run.
An FEC document (web link) seemed to confirm that she was seeking office as a presidential candidate for 2004. However, an FEC comment underneath the filing reads, "Candidate listings may appear here as a result of Draft committees or independent expenditure committees registering with the FEC. If no documents appear below, the individual identified here has taken no action to become a candidate."
According to an interview by Insight Magazine with the FEC, the filing was by a group called "DraftHillaryforPresident2004."
The group, dubbed an "unauthorized" draft committee by the FEC, lists Eric Leondard as its treasurer and he and/or it are located at 5041-7th Road South, #201, Arlington, VA 22204.
An FEC spokesman told Insight that under the agency's procedures, once a filing is made by or for absolutely anyone, then the filing gets an ID and automatically enters the name of the "candidate," in this case Sen. Clinton.
While Sen. Clinton announced earlier this year that she is not planning to run for the 2004 presidential race, her reelection web site (www.friendsofhillary.com) nonetheless features some plaudits from supporters offering their assistance should she decide to run.
Referring to Sen. Clinton, one individual wrote online, "I was reading the depths of her history and know what she will do in the future. Should she plan to run for President of the United States in the future, she can count not only on my vote but on my help in her campaign..."
Some months ago, in speculating on the possibility of Sen. Clinton running for president, Fox News pointed out that Democrats need a standard-bearer capable of beating President Bush. Polls have shown that Clinton generally polls better than the current field of Democrat candidates, but still behind Bush.
Despite Sen. Clinton's claim that she is not running, it could be significant that she will be the keynote speaker at the Iowa Democrat Party's annual fundraiser on November 15. Iowa is the home of the first-in-the-nation caucus.
If Sen. Clinton did decide to run, she would face a number of obstacles. As Fox News pointed out earlier this year, she would not want to be the loser in next year's race.
"If 2004 looks like a loser for the Democrats ... she would be demented to go in," Maurice Carroll, head of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, told Fox News.
"On top of that, Clinton's favorable and unfavorable are about even and she stands as a reminder of her husband's administration, wonderful to some, anathema to others," Fox News pointed out.
