I received a card back today - very neatly addressed to:
(Addressee)
(Street Address)
Etobicoke, ON M9C 4G6
Canada

It Had a label adhered:
RETURN TO SENDER
THE NAME OF THE POST OFFICE AND COUNTRY OF DESTINATION MUST BE WRITTEN IN FULL IN CAPITAL LETTERS.

Huh?

This rule has been around for some time but it seems to be selectively enforced.

pixia,

It's been around since october 2004... but is indeed selectively enforced. It's supposed to tighten security, or some nonsense like that... here's the original USPS announcement:

http://www.usps.com//communications/news/press/2004/pr04_069.htm

Basically... they want Canada to be CANADA

Thanks, both of you. I ship internationally all the time and use the downloaded addresses they typed in. Occasionally, I'll find CA instead of CANADA and I'll correct it. This is the first returned to me for THIS reason. Bother!

I'm curious. How long did it take for them to send it back to you?

Sorry, I've already corrected it and sent it on it's way. I would guess a week-10 days. MLK day was in the week, too,

I found that with a few clicks, I can easily change the countries to all caps in my spreadsheet. That's 2 new things I learned today!

Ten days is not bad. I've heard much worse.

Pixi? What are the few clicks?

I don't know about the few clicks, but there is a built-in Excel function (UPPER) that will convert text to all-CAPS. It would require an additional column, however.

I use Open Source spreadsheet - a free-ware Excel. It has a convert to upper case or lower case, similar to the one Cash mentioned. I highlight the country Column and convert to upper. Edited to add, I use My eBay to manage post sales. I click all records to be shipped then download them in cvs format. It has all the info I need, including the addresses.
