I posted a topic back in Feb (I believe), I had a customer say they didn't receive their package, of course, I couldn't track the customs # beyond saying it had left the country. Today, I get the package back! The item sold for the same as the shipping and I have never heard from that customer again. The package is marked with "did not pick up" all over the front. So my question is: how long can a person file a chargeback on paypal? I certainly do not feel like notifying him. He is his fault he never picked it up. Since the transaction happened in January, maybe I am safe? The item is a $15.00 item but the shipping was almost that much.
Thanks.

If he used his credit card,he can file chargeback with his cc issuer.
Intl chargeback can haunt you up to 1 year.
What country is he in?
Chargeback and disputes are not as common overseas.

I just won my first chargeback. Buyer claimed unauthorized use though it was clearly not. He simply overspent and thought he could get free stuff from honest sellers.

The EOA was 1-10-2006. The dishonest cretin finally paid on 1-30-2006. The chargeback was filed on 4-18-2006.

Why not just refund him before he does a chargeback since you now have the item and the money?

He is in the UK. I am not going to contact him because I am not willingly going to refund his money when the shipping was $15.00, also he apparently was notified several times and never picked up the package. Not my problem, it is May and I haven't heard from him since Feb. when I told him to check to see if customs was holding it. The package was never opened as far as I can see.

I don't understand what the amount of the shipping has to do with the problem. Didn't he pay for the shipping?

Just refund him the entire amount. email him first. He may have died. If there is no response to the email, I would wait until he contacts you to send refund. You have the package back. What more do you want? Your only loss is the listing and FVF fees.

If he does file a chargeback he will no doubt win and then PP will take an additional ten bucks from your account.

My loss is the shipping if I refund him. I emailed him several times in Feb. and twice in March - had no response.

I think this guy has moved on,if he is not picking up his package and not responding to your email.
I would just wait.

Zippy,
I do not understand your question, when I mailed this package, obviously I paid for the shipping. If I refund him through paypal, I would lose that plus the listing fee and FVF, on an item that was under $20.00.

"when I mailed this package, obviously I paid for the shipping"

Yes, I understand that but unless you offer free overseas shipping, he paid the shipping first, didn't he?

Yes, he paid for the shipping and item when he paypaled me the money, but if I refund him, I am OUT the shipping money.

I think the next move is his, if he makes one. I held up my end of this transaction and now I will wait. Maybe he didn't want to pay the customs on it. I do not check the gift box.

As of now, you haven't refunded, so you haven't paid the shipping. If you do a complete refund then yes, you will pay for the shipping but not unless you refund everything. I don't think you should do a complete refund but if he does a chargeback, you won't have a choice. He will get his shipping money back plus an additional ten bucks.

Why not refund for just the item now? Does it really seem right to you that you get to keep both the item and all the money just because he hasn't asked for it back?

Refund the item cost, and the shipping that he paid for minus the listing and FVF fees. Simply do not reship the item to him. Finished business.

I would refund the product. It's very believable that he did not see the notifications I received a final notice jammed inside a junk mail leaflet that a letter had been waiting for me several weeks at the PO- never saw the previous notices. Thirty years of selling has taught me that the messiest transactions can result in the best customers if you take care of them.

45 days is the limit for disputes through PayPal so you're safe on a straight reversal. Some credit card companies allow chargebacks between 60 to 90 days from the statement on which the charge occured; however in exceptional cases chargebacks can be made many years later (one of the dirty little secrets of accepting cards).

My advise would be to keep the item and do not contact the buyer (let sleeping dogs lie). If PayPal warn you of an impending chargeback on that transaction - refund the $30 promptly - otherwise you might have to pay a chargeback fee if you dispute it. (Given the facts you would most certainly lose the dispute.)

agitprop has it right. DO NOT CONTACT THIS LOSER Do not refund a dime. Even if you refund, that will not let you off of the hook for a chargeback.

At this point, take the item, resell it just in case and move on.

agitprop & ST0NEC0LD613:

I agree. I am going to wait, he is probably already to late for a paypal chargeback - if I refunded a partial (taking out the shipping, listing, FVF, and Paypal fees), he would not get that much and it would open up a can of worms.
