There was already fee hikes in Jan, was there not? Didn't the 35 cents listing fee go to 40 cents?
Any idea what this means?:
"According to Whitman, the factors contributing to the growth rates are, first, the move to "advantage" auction listing and discourage lower quality, poorly-priced listings."

Pixi: I didn't see the mention of "no fees in 2007." I did see this:
""As we think about fees - as you know, we typically do something once a year, January would be sort of the time that we would do something, and we have not made any decisions at this juncture. But I would not be putting fee increases necessarily into your model for 2008 and 2009."
Maybe the 2007 quote was somewhere else?

During a conference call with Wall Street analysts, eBay CEO Meg Whitman indicated that January would be the earliest eBay might increase fees.

Even so... it doesn't mean that they won't increase "other" fees... like maybe stores... or my personal bet, higher charges for using Paypal.
Or, even more likely... is they'll start charging fees for services that are currently free. Take the recent lack of store items in searches with less than 30 results. Remember how it was fixed so quickly that many of you doubted it was an actual problem, and more likely some sort of beta test? Well... maybe they'll start charging store sellers an extra cent or two for any listing that you want to show up in those types of searches. Or... maybe they'll start charging for completed item searches (like they've been threatening to do for years).
Anyone that believes Meg's spin about no new fees ought to have their head examined. Rest assured, eBay will find some way to squeeze more money from the sellers BEFORE 2008 rolls around.

. . . the earliest eBay "might" increase fees.
Huh.
I was once a staffer to a number of committees in a large chamber of commerce; the woman president that year was a fabulous person, charming, brilliant, etc. She'd call me and say, "Adele, I might not be able to make that meeting," and hem and haw. No reasons given. That always meant she wouldn't be there; it was just hard for her to say it.

Many financial analysts were surprised that the last fee hike didn't have a negative impact on eBay revenues. Meg may double-talk eBay's sellers, but I doubt if she's going to try to dupe the analysts - they like companies to behave predictably.
