Living in the mountains as we do, I order a lot of stuff online and from QVC. Today I got a small box with about 15 little plastic packets, each with this cheap plastic Newcastle Brown Ale pendant on a chain of blue beads. QVC label was correct, but there was no pack slip inside. I called QVC and said what the heck? I never ordered something like this. I don't even know what it's for. The customer service gal went over all my orders for which I've been billed this summer, and nothing like this was in that group. Furthermore, she could find no mention of Newcastle anywhere in the QVC world!

What is this thing? It came from Rocky Mount, NC. I feel like someone's playing with my head. I googled Newcastle Ale and it's British.

Road I bet the call room at QVC got a chuckle out of this! Have you searched closed auctions on ebay? Maybe you have a neighbor who "won" some new designer jewels!

The odd thing is that the package label was exactly the UPS package label QVC uses. My husband did notice that the box appeared to have clear tape over the normal brown tape QVC sends in. Then he wondered if they are Mardi Gras necklaces. I wouldn't have thought of that. Then I wondered if there was some kind of poison powder in the box. . . .

BUT MY VERY FIRST THOUGHT? (I know you're ahead of me here.) I wonder if I can sell these on eBay! Maybe I'll wait until a month before Mardi Gras and see if I can sell them in a lot.

LOL, always thinking, huh.

My guess is Mardi Gras necklaces.

Maybe it is just a freebie promotional item from QVC and Newcastle beer for being such a great customer.

QVC said they had no idea what this was all about!

But yes, I do think it's Mardi Gras necklaces, and I'm going to put them up for sale in the spring. What the heck, huh.

Google just told me this ale was brewed "specially for the Magic Hat Mardi Gras celebration." So there's a partial answer. But who sent it to me, and why? Too bizarre.

Newcastle is a town right next to my little podunk town but small and more podunky.

It's the Newcastle in England. You know, Newcastle on Tyne. It's been a favorite summer beer of mine for years, when Guinness is a bit too thick.

edited to add: "Like carrying coal to Newcastle"...that Newcastle.

Maybe someone recycled the QVC box.

Could a seller have sent the wrong item(?).

Yes, we thought perhaps the box had been recycled, but there was no return address other than the usual ship site from NC on the label I got, and the label had MY name and address on it. I haven't ordered anything from the east coast, either. It continues to be a mystery!

Had there been a return address of a real person, I would have sent a postcard to that person asking about this.

I wouldn't wait till Mardi Gras to list. I'd put one of them up now. And don't list it in the costume jewelry category . List it in the Breweriana category. I have sold several Newcastle items over there and done quite well.

Thanks, Sparkz! I think I know so much, but honestly I wouldn't have thought of Breweriana for these. One question, would you try to sell them one at a time or in a small or larger group?

I would list one and see how it does. Take one of them out of the package so you can get some good pictures. It may take a couple tries, but if it sells, spread them out over a long period. If it doesn't, you can always list them as a lot at Mardi Gras time.

I'm not much of a "Breweriana" person unless it's fresh beer in a bottle but I would try them by the piece first. If you don't get a bite then you could try them in lot's.

Are the packets sealed shut, or do they have openings?

The individual packets are stapled shut, so, yes, there are openings.

I wonder if they are homemade necklaces made from beer coasters, or an official promotional item from the brewery.

Maybe an email to the company could help solve the puzzle.

I'd try listing one, with the story about them being a mystery item sent to you in the mail, and maybe you'll find out more info from someone who collects Newcastle items (might get a bunch of watchers from other people who want to know where they came from).

Great idea to list one and tell the story of this mystery. I'll do that! Soon, I promise.
