Well, I'm finally ready to shoot this poor old thing and put it out of its misery.

I'm on the Dell website, and frankly, I'm lost.

All I do is check my e-mail, list auctions, come here, and do some research on items. I don't play games very often, and nothing I have to download.

I know I should have windows XP and need an ethernet port for DSL.

What do y'all recommend? I don't want to spend more than $1,000 and I don't need a monitor. I bought a flat screen about a year ago.

Thanks in advance, TerryAnn

I'm thinking about ordering a new computer too. I've been watching the newspaper and also checking Hot Deals Club.
Hot Deals Club is an internet site that shows super deals from electronics stores, both internet and brick and mortar.
Dell Computers show up quite often, and prices are sometimes unbelievable. Below is a link to Hot Deals Club.

Cheryl had some problems with the Dell she ordered and found the Customer Service was a NIGHTMARE. Maybe she will post about her experience - reading about it made up my mind to NOT buy a Dell (and I was all ready to do it).

I just bought an Emachines a couple of months ago and i'm happy with it. I got this model because it has 3 USB ports and a fire wire port on the front and it has enough memory for me to do whatever I need to do with manipulating images and such.

It cost me just under $500. It was being used as a store display model and they knocked off a hundred dollars from the price for me because of that. Their computer department Nerds did an opptimization on it because it was a floor model and I have had no problems with it whatsoever.

I literally took my old computer to the range and shot the heck out of it. I did remove the hard drive though and I formatted it and it is now in a hard drive enclosure, being used as a removeable storage drive.

Good luck with whatever you end up getting, TerryAnn.

I bot a new Compaq pc,it does not come with a backup dvd.
They expect you to make your own ,it will take either 7 dvd or 13 cd to do so,or you can buy it from them for a fee.
There is no paper instruction manual either,so just remember to ask when you are buying a new PC.

They tried to pull that crap on me about it not coming with a Recovery/backup disc, saying that it was on the computer but when I first talked to the computer salesman he said that it did come with one but then the cashier and their computer Nerds said, no it didn't.
A couple of weeks later after looking for it on the computer and not finding it I went back, reciept in hand, and talked to the store manager and sure enough they found my recovery cd and gave it to me along with the product codes for additional software loaded on it. The manual is on the computer but I don't mind that a bit.

Dell tech support is carp! You will be communicating with the nice folks in India who don't know their a** from hole in the ground. It took a week and 1/2 of calling India daily to get my computer replaced. I went through two hard drives, daily yelling fests, and the fun of taking apart different components of a brand new computer just so they could know that there was a hardware conflict. Well, duh, that's what I told them with my first phone call. I finally threatened legal action. I will never buy another Dell. OTH, from what I understand if you can purchase it from Dell Small Business, you'll be okay. That support is in the U.S.

Edited to add: Make sure you elect to purchase the OP system disk. It does not automatically come with the computer. Neither does a floppy drive. You must purchase an external one. I need the drive for some billing work I do outside of eBay.

You could go with a Mac. However, if it's one you have to order as a friend did, you'll need to wait for it to arrive at your door from CHINA. Yes, CHINA. That's where they are put together. Nothing is made in the USA anymore.

Thanks. I tried to look for that thread where all of this was discussed awhile back and couldn't find the thread.

I thought I remembered the Dell hassle Cheryl went through with customer service. A friend has one and loves it.

It's pretty bad when you're all but ignorant. I know what I need it to do and I want just a little bit more, just in case I get really busy. But if I walk in a store, they will try to sell me things I will never use, and I'd never know.

I gotta take some classes...I know that!

Any problems using any of the MacBooks or the Apple systems with ebay or Vendio? I am seriously considering a MacBook and am curious as to compatability with the programs we use.

When I was at the Apple store, I did not notice a difference in appearance when viewing both my ebay store and Vendio store. Anything I might have missed?

Doubt there are any problems. All the MacIntels including the MacBooks can run Windows XP or Vista (due 2007 - 2011) if need be.

Forgot to mention - Amazon is offering $100 rebate on MacBooks and $150 on the MacBook Pros...

If you're after a desktop then the Mini is discounted too

I used my Mac when I used Vendio for listing with no problems and obviously I have no problems posting here with it now. No problems with ebay either.

I was looking at that little black MacBook myself. If you get one, tell me what you think of it.

I got a new MacBook at work 2 weeks ago. I love it. I can run Windows XP as well as Mac OS X, which of course is my OS of choice. I installed Windows just to learn how to do it. No problems with Ebay. I don't know about Vendio as I don't use it for posting auctions. The MacBook has been running two weeks now without a shutdown. If that's all you do with your computer, I can't for the life of me figure out why you'd want to mess with the aggravation of Windows. Since you've already got a monitor, and I presume a keyboard, you might want to try a Mac Mini. Tiny little thing will powerfully do everything you need it to and more and take up no more space on your desk than a couple of tuna cans.

For 800 bucks you get:

1.66GHz Intel Core Duo processor
2MB L2 Cache
667MHz Frontside Bus
512MB memory (667MHz DDR2 SDRAM)
80GB Serial ATA hard drive
Double-layer SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
(DVD BURNER)
Built-in AirPort Extreme wireless and Bluetooth 2.0
Apple Remote
4 USB ports
firewire port (IEE 1394)

The only concern you might want to wait on fenix, Photoshop, if you use it, isn't optimized for the intel processor in the MacBook yet, but it will be. Currently it runs in emulation mode, so it's a bit slow, although not horribly so. I just use it on my desktop G5 mac instead of the _Book.
