It's a harpoon. Useful for getting whales that show up in your swimming pool.

Looks like a whale harpoon.

I wouldn't exactly call it a fishing item. It is an instrument for a painfull death used on whales, a harpoon. If it isn't a harpoon and it really kind of looks military because of the color then it could have been used for scaling cliffs. I really think it is a harpoon though.

Are there any markings, casting numbers or other identifying marks on it?

This is a postcard of a harpoon.

Wait a minute here, let me get this straight. It's a cast postcard of a harpoon that may have casting numbers somewhere on it?

'Harpoon' now that's a funny word. You've got a 'har' followed by a 'poon'.

It's a harpoon used to kill gentle defenseless whales. A sinister weapon that should be outlawed.

I have to wonder what kind of man would use such a weapon.

I agree, they should be outlawed. That way, it would be safe for fat people to return to the beach and frolic in the surf without having to worry about some trigger happy fisherman aboard an Oriental trawler that has drifted off course.

Just about the only two countries (other than indiginous peoples) who still murder whales are: NORWAY and JAPAN...

The NORWEGIANS are also just about the ONLY consumers of the BABY HARP SEAL "hunt" from our holier-than-thou bretheran of the North...

WTF is up with NORWAY???

Ralphie begs: "DON'T BUY KING OSKAR SARDINES! -- buy the ones from MAINE instead!"

My guess is that Norway allows it in deference to the Sami people, their brand of native folk.

NO, I'm not referring to various indigious peoples who have whale hunts & are restricted to consumption within their communities...

Both NORWAY and JAPAN have huge whaling industries that slaughter THOUSANDS of whales every year...

No other countries do this anymore...

Sorry, I've got a thing for MARINE MAMMALS and just cannot abide either the WHALE HUNTING INDUSTRIES nor that obscene BABY HARP SEAL massacre...What great fun! Skinning those seal pups (sometimes still alive) so some NORWEGIAN bimbo can wear a SEAL SKIN thong...From what I've been reading, NO other country purchases this crap other than NORWAY!

Actually, the hunting of seals is mostly used by Norwegians to manage the seal population, which has grown enormously and reportedly threatens the fishing industry of Norway. Not unlike deer hunting in many parts of the US.

Scandinavians are generally environmentally conscious and humane folks -- I'd hate to think of them as bloodthirsty barbarians.
I grew up in Scandinavia and the only seal by-product I ever saw were sealskin moccasins, keys chains, etc. (made by the Sami on the coast), never a seal steak. Now, we did eat whale, I will admit, or reindeer which came from the inland Sami or Lapps as we called them then.

I can't imagine eating seal but then I shudder at squirrel and possum too (favorite repasts here in the south it seems!).

There are about a dozen large importers of Seal pelts. Asians countrie import both the pelts and the meat.

Yes, but I'm referring specifically to the BABY HARP SEAL hunt, and, from what I read on MSNBC, there is virtually NO market for these pelts EXCEPT for NORWAY...

That site does speak for itself. It was very difficult to view it without tearing up.

Way to go, Tom and Ralphie! I'm with you all the way on the seal and whale issue!!

BTW: I'm neither a VEGAN, nor am I anti-hunting...

I've gone hunting with friends in UPSTATE NY when I was in college.

These folks lived on the same mountain since the 1850's (kinda like the WALTONS) and EVERYBODY in the family got hunting licenses...

BUT, they utilized every bit of the deer harvested -- nothing went to waste!

The BABY HARP SEALS are JUST SKINNED (often alive) and the meat is left to ROT!

Sorry, it just seems so OBSCENE to me...

I agree with you 100% Tom. Killing a critter to eat is one thing. To slaughter them for their pelt's is just plain wrong. I'm a hunter to and the critters in my neck of the woods know that if their in the wrong place at the wrong time their liable to end up on the table later that day for dinner. Those new to town find themselves in the frying pan rather quickly. But I don't go out shooting for fun and would never think of doing it for profit. I don't have a problem with indiginous people like the Eskimo's in the US/Alaska that hunt seals. Their lives depend on it. It supplies their clothing as well as their food. People that kill wildlife for profit should be hung up by their boot straps and skinned alive.

I do my best to protect the wildlife in my area. Found this little guy (about 4 1/2 feet long) in the middle of the road on the way back from the post office today. It's a black snake. Picked him up and brought him home and deposited him down in the field out of harms way with all the field mice. He should have some good eating.
