Yesterday I turned my chair to get up, pushed the little shelf in the desk back that my scanner sits on, and my scanner went crashing to the ground. Lid broke off, spring flew out, etc. Needless to say, it's not working properly. I want to get a Cannon again, and while looking at them online, I see that there is one that will copy old 35mm slides into photos. We have hundreds of these from 25 plus years ago when our kids were young. My question is, does anyone have one of these that can tell me how good they are? I don't want to pay the extra cost if they are not very efficient. I am disabled, and it has to be lightweight scanner so that I can lift it on and off the shelf when I need it, and Cannon does have a nice one.

Amber - You may have better luck if you try searching "Canon" instead of Cannon. I used to be a Canon copier dealer, and everyone wanted to spell it like the towels. I'm now a Xerox dealer and people insist on spelling that with a Z. Go figure!

Wish I had some advice for you on scanners, but I rarely use mine now that I have a really nice digital camera that pretty much eliminated the use of my scanner, even though I have a nice 11 x 17 inch scanner that works well. Just getting lazy with the camera I suppose.

Good luck with your search. Maybe you can find some sort of reviews on CNET or somewhere.

My husband bought an Epson 4180, after researching a lot. We are absolutely thrilled with it. We've been going through many years of old family slides, and he has old old photos from the 1800s of his ancestors etc., and he can touch them up beautifully and preserve the pictures. He also volunteers for our historical museum here, working on their photos. It's wonderful.

He does recommend that you get Vue Scan software to run it. The software he had in his computer was a bit harder to use.

Good luck!

cta, I actually did look under Canon, it was a typo. I found quite a few.

roadsmith, thanks for the suggestion, I will look at the Epson 4180. I am glad to hear that the slides work well. All the pictures of our children when young are on the slides, and we no longer have a projector to look at them.

I have a digital camera too, but I find for picturing craft books, the scanner works much better, and that is what I mostly sell.

It doesn't matter the brand as most of the scanners have that capability now.

I love my Microtek 6000 scanner and it came with a slide adaptor (haven't tried it though). It's not very heavy but it did take me awhile and a few Vendio posts to get the settings right.

You might consider getting a dedicated film scanner. They've come down quite a bit in price (few hundred $) and generally will do better than a flatbed scanner. Naturally, after you're done scanning all your negatives and slides you can sell it on eBay to recoup some of the cost.
