eBay Security Center: Urgent eBay Account Update Request.

Dear eBay member,

We recently noticed one or more attempts to log in to your eBay account from a foreign IP address and we have reasons to believe that your account was hacked by a third party without your authorization.

If you recently accessed your account while traveling, the unusual log in attempts may have been initiated by you.

The login attempt was made from:

IP address: 154.106.12.15

IS Host: cache-154.proxyes.aol.com.

If you choose to ignore our request, you leave us no choice but to temporally suspend your account.

We ask that you allow at least 72 hours for the case to be investigated and we strongly recommend not to make any changes to your account in that time.

However, if you are the rightful holder of the account, click on the link below, fill the form and then submit as we try to verify your identity:

eBay will request personal data (password, credit card/bank numbers, and so on) in this email.

Clowns!

As opposed to WHAT? Being "hacked" with authorization?

I must be a magnet because I get fraud emails for ebay and paypal all the time. I never have a problem though. Here's a little trick to save yourself alot of headache. Where it tell's you to click on the link it usually looks like www.ebay or www.paypal followed by a bunch of gobly gook. DO NOT LEFT CLICK ON IT, """EVER""". What you should do is RIGHT CLICK on it, this bring's up a toolbar, click on properties and a window pop's up with the actual web address you are being sent to. If it does not start something like www.ebay or www.paypal then it is a fraud. Forward the email to [email protected] , I have found they usually have the site's closed down in 1 to 2 days. My next suggestion is USE THE EBAY TOOL BAR. The account guard feature is the only reason I have it. If you ever get on a non paypal or ebay sight it is gray, if it is a fake paypal or ebay site it turns RED and a window pop's up making sure to alert you. In my opinion it works great. I have gone to a few of these fake sites on purpose just to see what they look like and they are very convincing. The one paypal one I went to one time looked exactally like paypal's sign in page, but the toolbar caught it and the big red alert poped up to alert me. Best advise is if you think it's a spoof, it probably is. Just do your self and everyone else a favor and report it to [email protected] so they can find and shut down the bad guy's. Hope this helps.

I do pretty much those things. i have a way of going into the back door as well without opening them. so i do tread carefully. i average about 8 paypal / ebay fakes a week. most i just send to the spoof mail to confirm.

you mentioned the ebay toolbar. i was warned off this one. you seem to be very happy with it. is it spyware.? does it take over things in your computer.? do you recommend it. i like the sound of the warning it gives to fake emails. is this for paypal as well as ebay.?

The ebay tool bar is downloadable from ebay. It is what I guess you would call a early warning system. If you go to a website that is not ebay or paypal and is pretending to be from them it warn's you by the account guard box turning red and a window pop's up also to tell you that you are not on a official ebay or paypal site and there is a icon you can click on to send the site information to ebay's security center. Also anytime you enter your ebay or paypal user ID and password in a non ebay or paypal site it again warn's you. It has a bunch of other features like my ebay, alerts for ending auctions, buying, selling. Basically a shrunk down my ebay page, just in toolbar form. Like I say, I really only use it for the security feature. I have not found a fake site yet that it did not alert me about. And in my experience when you report the fake site, if you check back in one or two days you will find the fake site has been shut down, meaning the bad guys have been had I'm not sure how they track them down or what happen's to them, all I know is the fradulant site's are delt with in a timley fassion. To download it, go to the ebay home page and at the bottom of the page click on the downloads icon. It is the first item avialable for download on the next page. I must say, it's about the only thing ebay has done correctly in a long time. They seem to screw up more things then they fix with there (**&%%^ upgrades, but I am happy with the toolbar.

Just be aware of the fact that the Ebay toolbar has been identified as spyware by many spyware removal programs. I have no idea what type of information it collects or where it sends it, but just be cautious of the fact that it is considered spyware before you install it.
