I keep getting sellers who have paid by check or m.o. writing to me saying that I have not marked their item as "paid" on my eBay (or their eBay in this case). As far as I can see, there is no way to do it, it is done by eBay when the buyer pays by Paypal. I have even had buyers tell me that eBay won't let them leave feedback because the item is not marked as paid. What are your thoughts on it?

They need to mark it paid themselves. They can do this in their "My Ebay".

You click that little (down) arrow next in the "Action" column and it will give you the option of marking them paid. You can even mark it that way when you get a Money Order or Check.
The only thing you can't do is change the "checkout" icon. That only gets done when they complete it on their end. You can also mark items shipped and use this area to provide feedback.

I don't think they can mark it "Paid" on their end. I just checked my buying ID and there's no option for that there. It has to come either when they complete payment through PayPal or when the seller marks it that way.

It is not your job to mark their item as paid. It is a stupid system and adds way too much work than it is worth. I haven't had anyone ask me to mark it paid yet, but if they do, the e-mail is getting the big delete.
Simply keep good records for yourself and move on.
As far as leaving feedback, that simply is BS. You can leave feedback for anyone at any time.

Am I right in thinking that the "paid" option is for the sellers records, not the buyers? I keep my own records, and never use the option on my eBay. I have had 8 or 9 people complain that I have not marked their items as paid, I think they feel it that it is a record that eBay is keeping of their payments.

That's correct Amber. The "My Ebay" page is an optional feature of Ebay. It's for the convenience of buyers and sellers only, and not at all mandatory for either. I was listing on Ebay for more than 2 years before I ever bothered to open mine. In the old days, when AuctionWatch would put a permanent cookie on your computer so you didn't have to login, it was much easier to track auctions through them than it was through Ebay. There are probably a large number of Ebayers who are not even aware of the My Ebay page.
