GG - i thought I remembered that you are from Panama City (or am I way off?)...I have an auction of a motel postcard from PC that is doing very well and I don't know what is so special about the PC..it's of the Americana Motel . All I can see "special" is the shot of the giant slide in the background...anything else?

Panama City has gorgeous beaches and at Spring Break they are packed with college kids. I have been there and there are cottages, motels, condos all along the beach because of its clean white sand and deep blue water.

I've lived in PC most of my life and I don't see anything really unique about this photo. The slide was there for a few years, my guess is mid or late seventies to the mid eighties but that is just a guess. The roller coaster in the top left of the photo is on the eastern edge of Miracle Strip Amusement Park which at one time was in the top ten attractions in the state of Florida and only operated for six months or so a year. The umbrellas were probably provided by Ed's Beach Service who was instrumental in the sale, promotion, and distribution of Panama Jack suntan oil and shirts. I don't think the Americana Motel has any real significance on PC Beach. The beaches area stretch approximately 17 miles along Thomas Drive and Front Beach Road and there are lots of motels.
Probably you just happen to have two bidders at the same time who remember some really good times in their youth spent on Panama City Beach, also known as the Redneck Riviera, though that name is not particularly popular with the local chamber of commerce. If you have another of these cards see if you can duplicate it in the future.

neglus, I've been buying older PC postcards for the last month so I just clicked on my Panama City postcard search link and what I saw is just pure insanity. There are four postcards of motels in the stratosphere and yours is one of them. The same two bidders seem to be competing to see who can throw the most money away. If you'll check your high bidder's (FF) closed auctions you will see he has been paying some high prices for postcards plus he has won every auction he has bid on.
What you are seeing here may have something to do with the current real estate boom. All these motels are being sold, torn down and condos are being built in their place.

Thanks getalife - the real estate boon must be the reason. I sold some Panama City postcards for great prices a year ago and then interest waned - wish I had back all the ones I sold at opening bids in the interim!
