Anyone using USPS click and ship or one of those self serve machines? If you are you need to know that the delivery confirmations when looked up on the web will not show the package being accepted by the P.O. All it will show is that the package was delivered. Usually when you use the green DC slip it gets scanned at the counter and will later show this scan when looked up on the web. This doesnt happen when using the other methods. So if your item doesnt get delivered you have NO record of this item in the USPS system and no recourse with Paypal. You have to take it to the counter and ask them to scan the packages. So much for not waiting in lines. Just a little heads up.

There are really TWO separate issue when discussing DC & PAYPAL & LIABILITY:
#1 VALUE: if you ship something valuable and the only documentation you employ is DC, then yer asking for problems.
I usually ask myself: "How much can I afford to lose?" Basically, anything over around $75, and I'm gonna ship "CERTIFIED" mail along with FREE DC ~ over around $150, & I'll probably ship via "REGISTERED MAIL" which adds around $8, but includes INSURANCE...
#2: PROOF for PAYPAL now, we're getting into a real gray area, as I'm no longer sure about THIS due to the recent change in PayPal's TOS!
I've asked PayPal for a "clarification" of their NEW rules (which basically demand proof of delivery to SPECIFIC ADDRESSES), but have not received an answer yet!
This new rule may throw a complete monkey-wrench into the whole concept of shipping via the USPS on anything!
OTOH: thru the use of ENDICIA + BAR-CODES + ADDRESSES VERIFIED thru the USPS AMS, I have NEVER had a package LOST since I began on feeBay in 1999 -- and ONLY 1 packie damaged in all that time

What about if you use USPS with DC but you've also insured it? Do all insured items get scanned, or are you still up the creek without a paddle if your package goes missing?

With USPS INS, only the >$50 (BLUE FORM) items get scanned into the system -- the <$50 (GREEN FORM) items do not have a tracking number! I use DSI anyhoo, so it donna matter one way or another (as Pat said)...

I doubt if the insurance gets scanned into the system either unless it is bought at the counter. It would not get scanned until it is delivered.

I have taken my packages with pre-paid labels on them to the Post Office and watched the Clerk scan the DC Barcode. It still doesn't always show up online as being accepted at the PO and may not show anything until it is delivered.
On the other hand, I've handed packages off to my Mailman and most times those do show up in the system as being "accepted" by the PO.
The only thing that is consistent with the online tracking is that it's very inconsistent.

Delivery confirmation is NOT tracking. All it shows is when it is delivered. This is what is up in the air with PayPal. In their new terms, that will not be good enough. We will see.

TNErnie,
That has been my experience as well. Take em to the PO , watch them scan them and never see it in on-line tracking until delivered.
OTOH, everything I hand to my mailman shows up in the system within 24 hours as "Received by the PO".
My mailman gets all of my packages now, plus a nice Christmas bonus for doing his job well!

I'm with ltray. My postman (and woman) scan my packages curbside and at Christmas I make sure they are very happy. Being out in the country helps and so does girl scout cookies.

The ONLY THING that yer $0.00 or $0.14 pays for is: A SCAN AT THE TIME OF DELIVERY!
Now, accidentally & incidentally, yer packies may perchance get scanned MORE than that -- however, if they are, it is purely by accident & NOT PART OF THE SERVICE YOU PAID LITTLE to NADA FOR!

If you request a pickup with click and ship it will show up. Also besides giving it to the post man when they scan it will show up that evening after they check in.
Plus the counter will show up.
Please note in small towns etc that have Post office's in business they do not have a scanner so it will not show up until delivery.
Good luck. Whoever said you have to consider your risk tolerance for loss is 100% right. What can you handle as a loss before it drives you crazy or over the edge.

So I guess we are just taking a chance no matter what unless we require a signature of some type??? Right!!!
If anything sells for more than $100 I look very close at the winner and if I don't like something - I don't take the paypal. I have it in all my listings that paypal over $50.00 is accept at my option.
ALL of these problems with the USPS are the reason we totally switched to UPS a few years ago insurance is cheaper, we require and get a confirmation signature, the address delivered to is posted on the UPS on line site, with a copy of the signature. We have had a daily account with UPS for a number of years, now, they pick up every day, no lines to stand in. We mainly went to them because we were tired of filling out insurance slips, and other problems that would not prove to PayPal OR our credit card processor that the item was delivered to the specific address, and we had a copy of the person who signed for it. Using UPS basically solved all those problems.
The only thing we use the USPS for is foreign orders. We only take BidPay for foreign orders, so that eliminates the PayPal issue, or a problem with our credit card processor.
I have already tried the Quick whatever program via the USPS, on line, and had endless problems with it, so our foreign orders are taken directly to our local post office our domestic shipments are picked up daily via UPS.
We have had serious and multiple problems with both FedEx and DHL, and that is why we do not use their services. When a wholesaler is shipping to us, we specifically specify to use UPS, because of the delivery problems we have had in getting items delivered to ourselves via FedEx and DHL. We have a large, brick and mortar store at the intersection of two State Highways, yet either the packages are not delivered at all, and we have to call our local FedEx office to find out what the problem is, or as with DHL, even worse, the last shipment to us via DHL, was delivered to, two different addresses, both wrong, although we live on a county road, with LARGE, LARGE numbers on the house. Our house is a 2 story, 10,000 foot structure rather hard to miss, but DHL did, and they finally left our package at a trailer at the end of a dirt road!! When we finally got the package by going ourselves to pick it up, the occupants had already opened it, and it was obvious that they had no intentions of returning it or calling the shipping company!!!
Using UPS solves 99% of our shipping problems inside the USA.

I just started doing UPS from our humble bachelor pad, and, so far, Ralphie & I are very happy with the EXTREME service rendered by our REP & by our DRIVER!
BUT: other than paying an EXTRA $3 per item, how are you getting a signature??
