Local friend of ours wants opinions on what the purpose of this shaker might have been? ... I told her I would ask the veritable fountain of knowledge (over here) ...

dacreson! ... uh ...noooooooo ... i could care less if ANY body takes a look at her stuff (would rather have people look at MY stuff! lol) ... SHE simply asked me what i thought the shaker was used for, and I'm not sure since it's 5 in. tall... would be too tall to be a salt shaker ....

ES, it is probably a talc bottle as she described.

Since you said she is a friend, I'm going to am trying to be nice, but if I read one more beautiful or gorgeous in her description titles, I am going to be sick!

lol, ltray ... yes ... i'm trying to be 'nice' to her, too; she IS new in the 'selling' part of ebay. (i haven;t even told her "yet" how hard it is on my eyes to read ALL CAPS on her listings ... ) I will probably get around to that soon ... Thanks for your thoughts ...

I would also suggest that the fact the she cannot make out the mark does not mean she should not include a pic of it. Someone else might recognize it.

hi fenix ... i have never seen her get a clear pic of a mark ... I am sure she has a not-good camera ... I will also be eventually telling her she needs a much better camera. ... thanks ...

Hey, i SAID she's local, and i recently bought a mixing bowl size i really need from her, that she is going to deliver this week ... I will tell her to bring that shaker along and I'll take a close-up of the mark for her ...

Does she have a scanner? I have found that with anything with a more or less flat base a scanner will do really well on marks.

I'm pretty sure she doesn't have a scanner either ... only because I'm thinking if she DID, she would know how to do scan., but i'll ask her.

I would guess from the size and the number of holes in the top, that this is a Sugar Shaker/Muffineer. The holes look a little small but it's possible.

The design and size indicate it is C. 1600 and from Salem Mass. The size of the holes are consistent with those used to dispense dried bat wings. It was probably used in some obscure witchcraft ritual. She really needs to move it to the proper category and set a high enough reserve so that some sharp bidder doesn't grab it for a measly hundred dollars or so.

I suggest she work on her spelling especially in her titles.....a "picture" is quite a different thing than a "pitcher".
