I have been away from ebay for some time. Ebay is unbearably slow, takes forever to load a page. Has it been slow or is there something wrong with my computer?

Ebay Slow:

Are you a seller, Then Ebay's working fine!

If you've been away from ebay for a while then the slowness you're expierencing are the new ebay page formats. They are slow loading even over a cable network when compared to the old page formats.

I'm not talking about sales being slow, the site is slow. Takes 3 to 5 minutes to download a page.
I went to the tech discussion boards and there are thousands of complaints about the slow downloads on ebay. It's not my computer. What happened? Ebay is not responding to these complaints by buyers and sellers. BUYERS ARE LEAVING ebay because they cannot execute bids at a time of their choosing. Check the tech boards.

If it is taking 3-5 minutes to download a page may7be you should consider moving into the 21st century and getting DSL. Dial up is dead.

Actually, I disagree that dialup is dead. And I have a cable modem at home.

Many hotels/motels don't yet have Internet access in their rooms. Of the ones that do, many charge for the service. (Especially Marriott.)

An Earthlink or AOL POP is usually a local call, which is free or likely inexpensive.

But the real problem is that Web sites in general and eBay in particular should be designed so that they work with the lowest common denominator...which is dialup. With each new revision, eBay gets more unwieldy for dialup users.

The answer is not to get DSL (if you even can), but to pressure eBay to pay more attention to usability.

I have the same problem, sometimes a page will load up to a certain percentage then will stall for a bit. Makes sniping an impossibility as it takes >30 seconds now to get a bid down instead of the usual 6-8.

I did a TRACERT at the command prompt and founds some missing hops near San Jose, for whatever that's worth.

This has been going on for over a week now.

Fenix03,

It is an elitist attitude to state that dial-up is dead. I have read that 40 to 60 % of folks are still on dial-up. I lived in Atlanta for ten years and had fast access for years and loved it. But, my new lifestyle precludes that I use dial-up and though it is most frustrating, I am glad it hasn't died. Actually it's about time providers make it accessible to all, i.e. price and availability.

I travel with my wife who works for a company that places her in a new position every three to six months. We love it but fast access is one thing I am forced to do without.

1) many areas do not have the proper connections yet

2) Each company wants to use a different modem so each time I move I would have to purchase a new one, provided the service was available.

3) It takes at least 2 weeks and usually about 6 weeks to get service which is not worth the setup charges and equipment purchases required in my case, only being in an area for about 12 weeks.

I agree with those who have stated that the web masters are amiss for not writing web pages to the lowest common denominator. If 40 -60% are still on dial-up, that's a lot of frustrated bidders who may give up. I know I bought a lot more items on Ebay when I had DSL!

Most states I get connected at 52kps but I've been here in Oregon two different times and never get connected at more than 28kps. Very painful.

I sure wish ebay would speed up the auction pages. The 3 to 7 second wait on cable makes ebay the slowest site on the internet.

Maybe this is partially why ebay has always been slow and has recently slowed down even more :

http://tinyurl.com/650r

Sullivan says eBay has recorded and documented every iota of data that has come through the Web site since it first went online in 1995. Every time someone makes a bid, sells an item, writes about someone else, even when the company cancels a sale for whatever reason - it documents all of the pertinent information.
