I very seldom get a bidder do this, but I had an auction go off and the person payed through Paypal for the auction only and no shipping. I have contacted them asking for the shipping charges and even sent an invoice from Paypal. My auction stated I would contact them after the auction with the shipping amount which I did. This person has a feedback of 44 overall 78 so They are not a newbie. How long would you wait before you sent the payment back and how what kind of feedback would you leave? Do people do this stuff to jerk my chain or what.

If it were me, I'd send all of it back now and then invoice them for the correct amount that includes shipping. I used to mess around with these people, but not anymore!

Go to PayPal and use the very convenient refund button then email them an invoice through paypal for the proper amount. I hope that solves your problem.

Hi, I agree with Cheryl, I use to give them the benefit of the doubt also. I put the exact weight of item in my auction, if it is under a pound I give exact shipping weight & cost. If it is not I give them my zip code, and also give them a choice between Parcel Post or priority. When I send my winning bidder notices out I give them the rates for both. I now send the money back through paypal, explaining that the price is not correct. This is to prevent the buyer from sending the additional monies through paypal and I have yet incurred another paypal transaction fee.

I just got an odd email from a buyer. 1st he writes me within minutes of EOA and says, "Hi, I wound up being high bidder on your item , can you tell me what the shipping is?

What does he mean I "wound-up" being high bidder? Sounds like he didnt really want to be high bidder? Why Bid then? So anyway, I send him shipping quote and he immediately paypals monies. I forgot to add insurance as optional, and as it was breakable, I figured I'd offer that so I emailed him back and said, I pack well but if you want insurance just let me know.(I even offered to split it with him.) He then emails me back and says, "I have paid you per your shipping quote. If it is less, feel free to credit my account."

What a pip! LIKE JACK ALWAYS SAYS, PEOPLE DO NOT READ!

So, I emailed him back and told him it truthfully, came out a little more than what was quoted, (he had to have PPost not priority) -- but I didnt think it was worth mentioning, and Im sorry if he felt I misquoted him, or double quoted him on shipping.

And you know what, folks? I didnt even try to make any money on the shipping because the bidding far exceeded what I thought I was going to get for this item.

BTW, does anybody else ever do that? Cut back on your shipping overage when your item does really well? haha...or am I just a fool?

If I have an auction item that does much better than I thought it would I always pay the insurance. Much of the time I will give them a free upgrade to Priority Mail at my expense.
In the case you first stated in your post I would not get worked up by the insurance, simply pay for it and next time factor it in when you figure out the s/h as a lesson learned. I try to only send my personal EOA and a 'shipping item' email to the buyers. Anymore than that is annoying to the buyers and tends to make the seller look a tad flaky. Even when their address in not in the 9 digit zip code finder ( like many rural Wisconsin addresses ) I will not email them about the postal address as it tends to set them off that you are saying their wrong or stupid.

I hear what you're saying about getting emails from winners that say "Looks like I wound up winning your auction". It sounds like they might want out but it's hard to say as some people act that way about everything in their life.

neroter12....I give breaks on shipping when something sell extremely higher than I thought ....I even paid for shipping once on something that sold for over 300.00 that I paid less than a dollar for ....your not a fool it called good business ...you want them kind of people to keep looking at your auctions. I even go as far as looking at other things they buy to see if I have something laying around to send as a free gift or bonus.

oh good, I am glad I am not the only one who does that. Was pretty sure someone here was going to tell me to reconsider doing that, in making up for the listing fees for items that dont sell?

Toasted, when something sells way above what I paid for it - I kinda feel a bit of a swindler sometimes and I do stick in extras (when the mood hits me...lol). But I do tell myself, I didnt do it - they did.

Ace, I guess you're right. Some dont want to be bothered with any "friendly transaction) and I know this; and yeah, some people approach everything in a non-plussed kind of manner.

The item did wind up going priority anyway, b/c the DH (designated hitter? dear honey?)
took them to the PO and just told the guy everything priority. (Like he cares about following my instructions!!!0)

Tom, BTW, I can still can friggin d/l endicia. What a pain. I guess I will have to call them. (computer keeps hanging up on it?)

..and you made a little bit of profit anyway, huh Tom!
Here's the weirdest shipping story I EVER hope to have, and it was all my own fault; last week- shipped off a package- it came back to me- it was addressed to me! From me, too. I wrote the guy, confessing and said I'd send it the right way this time. That was friday. I left it on the table- My kid came home from school, and... tore open the box to see what mom had bought for him LOL
I had to repack it in a new box, and I din't get it out untill yesterday. I bet the guy will think I was just making lame excuses.
And I paid shipping twice. And I billed him low the first time!

I once sold a book to a guy for $6 and sent it Media Mail and he wrote that there was a torn page and he wanted a refund. I told him to mail back the book and I'd refund his entire Paypal payment. Most will not go to the trouble but this guy put the book back in my bubble mailer and taped it up and wrote "refused" on the package and sent it back. That's against the postal regulations but he must have found a sympathic or uncaring clerk.

It was a small price to pay to possibly avoid and block a crazed auction game player. It was unique in that he was clever enough to figure out how to get free return shipping. His feedback shows that he tried this 'return trick' more than once.

I had a pair of earrings I was selling on a one of my other accounts that went WAY above what I expected, and far beyond what they were worth 3 days into the auction. Since I knew that there were going to be problems if it went any higher I ended the auctions early and threw in a bracelet of the same style. (Still had a 400% profit margin)

Buyer wrote me once they recieved the package, acknowledged that they realized they had overbid and would have felt ripped off had it not been for the bracelet. I'm not normally that giving but sometimes it pays to do something a little extra.

Dragonmom,
Always liked that saying.

Tom, nah, my video driver is messed up or something. (Stupid windows updated me to direct 9x and since then get numerous errors.) But anyway finally got it downloaded -- now I have to figure out how to work it....lol.

Ace, ya think the guy just copied or read what he wanted and sent it back to you??

They finally sent me the shipping. But I think next time I'm going to do what was suggested. I have had auctions I reduced shipping on because they brought a lot more than I expected, and one I gave free shipping. And I had one auction the guy said he didn't want to pay shipping,he drove across the state and came to the flea market to pick it up,which I had to drive back to my house to get it and he bought a bunch more stuff. It was collectible whiskey bottles. Ended up to be a great sale.

My DH said I should not reduce Mark-up on shipping blah, blah, the other fees.

Like Fenix said, sometimes its worth it.

It looks like most of us are on the same page when it comes to S/H. If my TOS says 1st class postage $1.75 does not include insurance and the item goes higher than I expect I will put the insurance on it. I think that is good business and now I see I am one of the bunch that thinks the same way. Hey where do you get these widgets that go so high. I wish I could find a few of those. Every once in a while I get one but there are so many eBay sellers in this dumb town I know I will never find it.

I don't put any info about weight of item in my listings. I just say media mail for books, priority mail for everything else. Delivery conf. required on everything. Insurance optional on non-breakable items. Then I say that I'll contact them when auction ends. I've had two people this week pay with PayPal before I had a chance to e-mail give them a total (media mail). Both guessed wrong on the shipping. One was a very nice newbie. The other had 1200 feedbacks and should have known better.

Would putting the shipping charges in the listing keep them from doing that? I don't use eBay checkout because I think it's too confusing. If I buy something on eBay checkout, I get multiple e-mails on one sale. Too cluttered.

I'm wandering off the subject.... Sigh!

On Books, records,CDs,DVDs and Videos I use a flat rate shipping charge. I do give a combined shipping rate if they buy more than one item.

I was just thinking that myself today. So much email on 1 transaction. List confirm, EOA email, awconfirm, paypal, and I think there is one more. Seems like 5 of them. It is starting to annoy me as it takes too much time to organize them.

Theres got to be a better way!

I usually throw in insurance on orders over $50. That always seems to rub the bidders the right way.

On about the 5th order, I'll half the shipping for them and upgrade to Priority mail. It keeps them coming back for more.

I have so many leftover widgets that I try to throw in something that goes with what they already bought. It's nice to open your package and discover a useful freebie. Even if I would consider it my house-cluttering trash :0)
