When I moved 18 months ago, I had to go without dsl for a whole month. I was using cable modem before. It was a VERY long month...I would never consider using dialup again (unless I had no choice for a short period of time, I would not even move somewhere unless I could get high speed access)

hubby keeps telling me to get dsl through our cable company...you are telling me it's worth an extra $20 bucks a month? i know the dial up drives me crazy most days.
Congrats! My sister has a cable modem, and I LOOOOVVVVVEEEE searching eBay on it! It's always a disappointing adjustment to come back to my computer after being on hers.

It's definitely a HUGE difference from a dial-up--you'll wonder how you ever stood the slow download times! It's also great for sniping.....
However, the reason I still keep my dial-up is that I've heard you have to get very good firewall protection (not just anti-virus). Because your computer is connected to the internet at all times, I believe you are more susceptible to hacking. Be careful of sensitive information that you store on your computer (i.e. banking info, confidential documents). Your cable or DSL provider can probably steer you toward a good product.

Congratulations! Broadband is the only way to go. You have no idea what you've been missing without it. Here's a good link with lots of broadband tools, discussion groups etc. You can run speed checks to see if you're getting what you're paying for.

The best reason for keeping dialup in addition to a fast connection is travel.
An Earthlink account is really nice to have when you're on the road.

When DSL was first becoming popular years ago my ISP god ried to talk me into into but I was resistant because of the open channel issue and the fact that all of my companies financial and customer info was right there on my computer. (plis it was somewhere in the $300 set up charge back then). He just looked at me and laughed.... "Silly girl, don't you know that your Mac has built in firewall?", add that to going over 10 years without a virus and well..... I bet you know what computers I endorse : )
As for DSL and cable.... I don't remember and desperately try to ignore that there was a time they did not exist. Even with DSL I find using Sales Manager hideously slow (the main reason I have started using AWorks) , I can't imagine trying to use it with a dial up.

Hello
Any seller that lists 10 lots a week or more who is not on wide band (and can be) is just a can short of a six-pack. With wide band you list more, sell more, improve your listings more and have cut your stress down 80% or more. However the seller might be my competitor so to those sellers please keep your old dial up system... please....

You're exactly right, and if my brain hadn't been fried by trying to post at an ungodly hour of the morning, I would have listed that as my second main reason!

Congrats! I finally got broadband myself
right at the end of July, 2002 (cable) and it
is great! It is like a whole new Internet!

I have to keep my dialup for travel since we have a separate business that uses the internet to send all work orders. We have to confirm receipt in 24 hours or we are terminated.
Anyway, that makes the broadband cost me $49 extra a month and it is worth every single penny! When I have to use the dialup I nearly go crazy.
Our cable company offers two levels of broadband. Fast at $39 a month and double that at $49 a month. I switched to the faster one last month and would be willing to pay double that if I had to in order to stay away from dialup and sloooooooow access.
