Just got an email from the high bidder on this auction I have going (hope the link works):

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1356528309

Offering me $30.00 if I kill it right now. Note that the high bidder has one neg for being a deadbeat, but he's offering me quite a bit over what the game is worth (and more than I paid for it). Would you go through with it, risking the insertion fee in case he flakes on it (pretty much all I'm risking), or let it ride, knowing you likely wouldn't get anywhere near as much if you let it run out?

Never end an auction early. It makes no sense at all to do that.

No, let them bid on it if they want it that bad. You may do even better than what you expect.

Never End an Auction!
If it has no bid's and they offer you something. Revise it and add a BIN for the amount they offered.
Other wise just tell them to put in a proxy bid for the amount they offered.

If the item has no bids I revise the auction and put a BIN on it so the person can buy it right away. Only once has someone else beat my buyer to the punch. That was interesting.

Just this week I had a request to end the auction with a very tempting amount of money but the item already had 6 bids. I replied that I was sorry but couldn't end the auction as it had bids but hope that they would participate in the bidding process.

Sometimes it's hard to do the right thing. Besides it would be fee avoidence to cancel bids, end it early, and sell it off ebay.

Thanks for all the input...I just now get another email from someone else asking if I ever consider the second high bidder if the high bidder flakes, so obviously there's SOME interest in it. As for what they're going for, generally used ones go for around $10-15 each, but I don't see any new in box ones available at present (makes me wonder WHY that person is willing to pay $30 for it when there's plenty of used ones for half that), so maybe this might get some bids in the days to come. Think I'll let it ride but definitely advertise it on the Nintendo (usenet) newsgroups just in case somebody's looking for it but doesn't realize they really have to have it!

tkae the money but be sure ebay gets their share. They make great money but deserve it as they provide the vehicle for us to sell things we'd be throwing in the trash! My first big sale was a plastic model car that I sold for $600 and only paid $20 for in a lot. The box was moldy and my wife didn't even want it in our caravan.

one more thing to consider is tell hjim to paypal the money to you and then revise it so he can BIN or personal offer. Ebay has made it terrible difficult (timewise) to get your fees back .

Another thing is your high bidder is high bidder on three game units to the tune of over $1,000 , Curious.

tell him to paypal you $30.00 right now,
and you will close it down after payment is recieved plus you'll ship it for free,
(since you said it's more then you want)
that way you can be sure about your insertion fees and that he really does want it.
if he says no, let it run

Whoa. Does this send up big red flag for anyone else? Could bidder #2 possibly know that bidder #1 has a reputation for flaking? One neg for non-payment doesn't necessarily establish a pattern, but the fact that he's got over $1000 out in bids
*and* someone else wants to know what your plan is in case the sale falls through doesn't seem quite right to me.

Just my 2 cents - I have a Green Bay Packers video up for auction right now. I had two of them, and someone asked if he could buy it now. I told him I had another one and I would sell him that one for $4.99 (I really thought it was worthless - it was just a yearbook video which usually doesn't go). He emailed me back and said he'd take both of them. By that time the other one had a bid and I told him I couldn't end it anymore, but he could have the one I hadn't listed yet.
The one that's still up for auction is at $36.00. I will NEVER do that again!

Up to $20.50 right now, so I'm not going to worry about the other guy.

Sounds like person #2 is also person #1. How does person #2 know what person #1 is offering? In your specific case, I would be willing to bet this person is selling the same thing and is trying to get rid of the competition so they can get a good price for theirs. Then they contact you with a different ebay ID just to get rid of yours. I would bet this person also has a very low feedback rating and probably has been a member for quite sometime.

What I do in these cases is tell the person to send payment via verified only PayPal. Then I cancel the auction once I get the payment. I have no problem with it if I get the money, which is the bottom line. If they don't send payment asap, the auction goes on.

I'm so glad this thread was started! I constantly get emails asking me to stop the auction and sell at sometimes a lower price than the reserve. I simply don't answer them anymore because these people just keep emailing me over and over if I politely respond to them and tell them no. If the person really wants to buy the item, they will bid like everyone else does. This is an auction not a bargaining bizarre. If they feel they can find a better deal on the same item elsewhere, then by all means they should purchase the item elsewhere! I don't care if I lose customers who are like this. In fact, after a couple of emails repeatedly asking me to sell at lower prices, I just add them to my blocked bidder list.

Did you notice that one bidder cancelled his bid, and now it is back to 7.00? He left a pretty rude comment, too. Probably your emailer, doing it on purpose! DONT give in to him!

jumbo321... look him up, see what he is bidding on! He bid on (and won) 3 game systems that are all the same! (One was 600.00!!!) And he has -1 feedback. Tells me he bids, wins, and doesn't pay! Could be he wanted it to sell under another Id, and when you wouldn't let him have it, he bid, then cancelled just to leave the rude comment!!

I was just checking out this thread...CONGRATS! on the $41 ending price. The winner looks like a solid citizen. Have you noticed that your bid retractor is now up to zero feedback - due to a positive that's actually a plea from a seller to contact them?

Someone should bookmark this thread and re-post it every time someone asks "Should I end my auction early?"
