This has been one straaaaange transaction.

Within minutes of winning a $20 item, I get one of those automated invoices from ebay. I go right to Paypal and pay the amount specified.

I get an angry email from the seller asking why I didn't wait for an invoice and that the amount was wrong.

Okay - I pay the additional $4.50.

WRONG, the amount they sent me was just for the shipping, so I still owe $1.

They said to MAIL it because they weren't paying anymore paypal fees, because it's a consigned item, blah, blah, blah!

So - did I screw up? I told them to just send the lure without the insurance (which they suggested in the latest email), so I wouldn't have to mail a $1. This person is still hounding me, telling me that I should have waited for an invoice!

Sellers have been known to have bad days, right?

Politely suggest that he refund your Paypal transactions (he can still do that if 5 days hasn't gone by - and the fees go with them) so that you can pay one amount for what ever the >real< total is.

I'll leave it up to you to figure out what that my be. But please reread the listing to see what this seller has to "say" about it.

A real jerk! Have him refund the money and send him one PayPal payment. Do not send him the dollar and tell him you will send the correct amount as soon as he issues the refund. And don't let him bully you further. You can always do a chargeback if he continues to be a bonehead

I would certainly insure the item from this seller.

It's best to wait for the real invoice from the seller instead of the automated ebay end of auction notice. I know it is a small amount but they do add up. I don't blame the seller for being annoyed (privately annoyed that is) but they should have also known that they could refund or refuse the original amount, and have you send the right amount, and deal with it in a professional way.

I like when people pay fast, much nicer than the ones who never pay at all!

Sounds like the automated eBay invoice did not have shipping and insurance boxes filled in. That should have told you it was not corect. A lot of sellers do not use eBays invoices.
