I am curiuos if anyone has any knowledge of lignum vitae wood a very hard wood. Would it be possible to make a knife from this wood that would not be detected by metal detectors? I would guess those responsible for security are aware of this, I sure hope so.

tomswift: I do not know how metal detectors work. I am guessing by density. If this wood is that strong maybe their density would be enough to be set off the detectors. Do you know?

You should take it over on the Round Table.
The pacific Islanders had wood swords. Some of them were set with serrations of shark teeth or sea shells on the edges.
You also have daggers historically made of obsideon (glassy stone) and jade.
However you can make a terrific strong serrated knive out of about 50¢ of Lexan plastic.
Some very expensive kitchen knives are made from ceramics.
I have relatives up in the hills of West Virginia that have glass knives and won't cut a tomato with anything else because they say it ruins the taste. I have no idea where they get those things - never thought to ask.
