September 24, 2001 - eBay Extends Ban of WTC/Pentagon Items - Except for Charity Auctions
eBay announced that it is changing its policy after consulting with the government of New York: eBay will now allow "positive" commemorative items that relate to the 9-11 terrorist attacks to be sold in its "Auction for America" charity listings. This includes items that incorporate images of the World Trade Center or Pentagon before the attack. This policy change ONLY applies to "Auction for America" listings.

However, eBay is extending its ban of items - commemorative or otherwise - that have World Trade Center, WTC, Twin Towers, Pentagon, September 11, Auction for America or similar terms in the auction titles (except for Auction for America listings). eBay is extending the ban for the rest of the year.

Half.com, a fixed-price site owned by eBay, is allowing items that relate to the World Trade Center or the Pentagon to be sold through its site, but asks that users not refer to the World Trade Center, the Pentagon or the events of September 11th in the comment section of offerings.

Pretty interesting...

Does Yahoo and Carnaby have the same type of ban? I've seen a bunch of very "positive" commemorative items (banners, t-shirts, pins, etc.) that could easily sell on auction sites that eBay will now lose out on. These aren't the seedy items eBay ought to be focusing on. Millions of these items are going to be sold, but where?

Now let me see if I understand this correctly:

I can't play basketball on court # 1;
but I CAN play basketball on court #2....

If I get caught playing on court #1, I get kicked off & told how bad I am;

but if I agree to play on court #2, AND LEAVE MY BASKETBALL WHEN I AM DONE, suddenly I am one of the "good guys"?

Gee....I don't like remember recess operating like this....except when the schoolyard BULLY was making the rules!

YEP! I guess I DO understand now!

WE AGREE AGAIN!!!

I never wanted people to make money selling morbid items relating to the attacks. But selling "positive" WTC/Pentagon items should be okay for anyone, anywhere. And it seems to be ok to "disrespect the victims" if you take part in AFA, but not if you're doing it as your business.

I do not have any WTC items to sell -- but this just shows the stupidity of the people in charge at ebay.

Man we need another site. If I had a surefire way of getting buyers, I'd start one.

peiklk: Should I be worried that we are agreeing TOO much or what???

This "newest" ban is absolutely UN-fricken-believable! I am beginning to think that they have hired Jerry Falwell to do their public relations!

(Open mouth....swallow appendage...worry about the fall-out later!)
