If you have Internet Explorer 6.0, please check your virus software. I have Windows 2000 Pro with IE 6.0, and have been running McAfee. I got the NIMDA virus this morning - not from email, but from MusicCity.com while trying to download Morpheus. This happened at 8:30 this morning and I am just now able to get back working on my computer.
Long story short, when I got the message box that said my system had been infected with the NIMDA virus, I deleted the file as recommended (file was CSstartusersearch[1].htm.vi), and then immediately tried to do a scan on line. I could get to the McAfee site, but that was it. Everytime I attempted to run a scan or open information on the virus, my computer quit responding. The ONLY thing McAfee program did for me is to notify me that I had the virus.
I finally was able to get McAfee by phone - and they said NONE of their anti-virus programs support IE 6.0, so the protection I had was virtually useless. I just renewed in July and paid close to $40.00 for the McAfee Suite and some other programs, and only today do I find out that either they do not support IE 6.0 or Windows 2000 Pro.
It has been one hell of a day, and thanks to Norton, I am back on line and protected. This has been an absolute nightmare, so please check your virus program if you have IE 6.0.
And I am 100% positive if was from the MusicCity.com site, because it was the only site I had accessed to that point.

Yikes! What a nightmare. Glad you came out of it, finally! Also glad you switched over to Norton's...WAY BETTER! Now you don't have to worry about that happening again.

You and me both! I have never been one to "bash", but I feel I have the experience (now!) behind me to bash McAfee. For your comic relief of the day, here is a brief synopsis of my telephone conversation with the tech...
As I was ranting and raving (to put it mildly), I asked him WHY McAfee did not post on their website that they did not support IE 6.0...He said they "just haven't gotten around to it, I guess".
And now this is where you will really ROTF and LYAO...
After explaining that Windows 2000 Pro was my operating system, he said that since I couldn't scan with IE 6.0, I "probably" could do a scan in DOS. Okay, I'm not all that techy, and figured "at this point, what do I have to lose" - after all, he had the title of "Tech"....He then proceeds to tell me that he will email me instructions on how to run a scan in DOS. Knowing I had the virus, I had not even considered opening my email....So I ask him "Is it safe to open OE knowing I have this virus?" And Einstein says "oh yes"; I then ask him "Are you 100% certain that my address book will be protected if I open OE?", to which he replies "uh, I don't know...do you have another email address?" You get what you pay for.....

I was LMAO when I got to the part about doing a scan in DOS on a Windows NT (2000) system. NT is based on an entirely different architecture. Nary a whiff of DOS, although there *is* a command-line console mode. And this guy's a tech? LOL BTW, I've tried all the better known virus scanners, and I keep coming back to Norton. Nothing else compares. I can't say I've never downloaded an infected file, but thanks to good old Norton AV Auto Protect, I've never, ever had a virus infect my system.

I feel like the software guy tonight!
Windows 2000 Pro is a target for a virus that win 95 98 and ME is not.
cool, very very fast browser is Opera 5.12
extreamly fast and not a target.
I beta the new ie stuff and never had a problem. I only use Opera 5.12 or ie 6.0 today, nothing else works for me. everyone I know uses ie. you will like Opera once you tweak it to your liking.

You failed to mention that Opera is VERY friendly to Ebay. I never revise auctions with IE anymore. The errors that come back are just too frustrating, and I usually don't have the time to wait 2 minutes before hitting the submit button. I have yet to receive an error when using Opera to revise an auction. Uploading images to Auctionwatch image hosting is twice as fast also with no timeouts.
The light at the end of the tunnel will turn out to be an oncoming train.
