I am a seller primarily on eBay, and I realized that everybody I deal with via email is put automatically into my address book (I never asked it to do that, so I think it is automatic). If you also use Outlook Express, check to see how big your address book is. Mine had literally hundreds and hundreds of email addresses in there (most of which I will NEVER use - some customers from three years ago!), and with this new NIMDA virus that is out today, I could potentially infect every single one. In case you are in the same boat as me, maybe do what I did. I created a folder for my personal contacts I did not want to lose and transferred them, and then I deleted ~every last one~ of the addresses in there.
I looked at it from a buyers perspective, that if I was still in the address book of someone I bought something from 2 years ago, and the virus was automatically transferred to me, I would be MAD!
Just a thought to better the eBay world!

In Outlook Express.
Go to Tools>Options
Click on the "Send" tab.
You will see a check box next to the option: "Automatically put people I reply too in my address book"
If you uncheck this, your problem will go away.
I hope that helps.

Is there an option with Outlook not to automatically the first new email? Just have new emails show up on the top screen without opening the first one in the bottom screen?

Click View->Layout and uncheck the box that says "Show preview pane".

commentary,
You should definately consider eliminating the "preview pane". It automatically opens your email which you may not want done in times of high virus problems, unless you are running email scan on something like Nortons.

GET REAL PEOPLE!
OutLook Is the biggest supply guy of unknown viruses ...... ever since I switched to "thebat!" I have had ZERO risk and one heck of a mail program that takes care of over two doen address.......
take a look! dump outlook
http://www.ritlabs.com/the_bat/
The Bat! 1.53d
you get what you pay for...
The Bat! is invulnerable to the recent Magistr.B dangerous virus. The Bat! is very well-protected against viruses and trojans that spread via email. The Bat! doesn't use the Windows address book and Windows-dependent HTML viewer, which have been the targets of many recent attacks. The Bat! warns the user before opening suspicious attachments or even blocks them completely.
etc etc etc

Greetings:
A couple of years ago when these email attach viruses were being released we went to a system of allowing Outlook or Express capture the email addresses for us.
Each week or so we would then go and FILE Export the address book into and Excel worksheet and cut/paste it onto the master.
Then go back and delete all entries in Outlook or Express.
Crude but it really protects you and your customers, friends, and family. It takes an extra step or two now and then but what is that worth if you infect 2000 people with a virus?

Thanks all - eliminated the preview pane.
That has to be one of the dumbest title for an option. Without clicking thru - one has no idea what preview pane stands for.

I think M$ should change the name of Outlook to LookOut! Fortunately I recently had to reinstall Windows 2000 on my system and now Outlook doesn't work at all Before that, I was trying to keep my work accounts on Outlook, and personal accounts on Outlook Express. One day I noticed my Outlook Express address book was empty -- everything had been stolen by Outlook.
I haven't tried The Bat but will. Also, take a look at Poco -- it's so much better for multiple accounts than either Outlook or Outlook Express, and its preview pane doesn't download images unless you ask -- when the images are opened, the sender can know you opened it.
I've got enough to do without trying to keep Outlook running.

I've used Outlook and Outlook Express for years here at home and for the last year at work. I've been using Outlook Express 6 for at least 2 months. I send and receive dozens of emails a day and when I'm really into selling, hundreds a week. I have NEVER had a problem. What am I doing wrong ?

mrpotatoheadd, a belated thanks for your advise. Finally, the answer I was looking for!
2 1/2 years and never liked that I could not screen the email before the preview went up on the screen.

Below are instructions on how to configure your e-mail client and browser for "High" Security. This has not affected my browsing on eBay and virtually ever other site I have visited. This will partially protect you from the nimba worm. Make sure to also install the patch posted a few messages above.
