Just took an overview look of the Pottery and Glass area at Ebay. I think they have gone overboard. Just wondering what you folks think.

Its the same if you have an old book,there are half a dozen different possibilites to list it in all valid and book related.

There's at least 3 categories for quilts (and that's not counting categories like Textiles:General or Folk Art). Makes me NUTS.
Having a gadzillion mini-microcategories is what DESTROYS bidding.
In early '99 eBay unleashed dozens of new book categories, and OVERNIGHT bids plummeted and never recuperated. The same thing happened at amazon.com auctions, and was even worse cause then came zShops which devestated the auctions further.
When there are TOOOOOOOOOOOOO many categories, the *random find* hit decreases to nil -- You only run across things you weren't looking for, but HAVE to have, lol -- if they have been put into the wrong category, which you happen to be browsing.
THERE ARE WAY TOO MANY CATEGORIES, so when one does happen to browse, they of course go directly to their 2, 3 or even 4 most favorite mini-microcatagories, and even to browse through a couple categories takes way way way too long.
The day and age of the RANDOM SPONTANEOUS, "didn't-know-I-wanted-THAT" bid -- it's all over and done, finished almost two full years ago.

Actually, I think there should be more, or else EVERYTHING should be kicked back into more general categories. I can't believe the minute categorization of some areas, but apparently there have been enough listings in each category to justify the division. I do know that there are some items that could benefit from additional manufacturer categories in Pottery & Glass.

I think we would all get more bids if there were less categories so bidders would have to look through more of the listings instead of getting tired looking through one smaller one and missing something else. I also think since there are soooo many categories maybe ebay should let us "free" have our listing show up in three categories. I know that would really mess up their system but as it is lately on Ebay the sellers aren't getting as many bids and Ebay is still getting the listing fees on every one of our auctions while our % of items listed getting bids is vastly dwindling.

Am I the only one who doesn't go thru the plethera of categories and simply types in a general name in the main search category when I want to buy something?? We put stuff in as general a category as possible to avoid the worry and don't have any problems selling. And bidding? Wanted some Batman stuff for my son's 2nd birthday party.. yes, simply typing in 'Batman' brought up over 7000 items, but MAN! The fun I had looking it all over and the BIDS I placed!
I agree with you!!! It is so much easier to type in what you are looking for in a general search. As far as to many categories go. Evidently eBay has had requests for this many categories, or obviously they wouldn't be there.

I think the categories need to be revised. It took me FOREVER to find the salt & pepper shaker category. You have to go through about three other categories, and then it's listed as "shakers". So if you look under "salt", you won't find them. Also, Avon products are listed under "bottles". Well, what if they're not bottles? What if they're sets of the product, or plastic, or something? I get really ticked off when I'm listing because the of the stupid categories. Grrr.

Depends on your category. I often wish they would have more sub-categories for books. For classical literature, plays, agriculture, etc.

As a bidder, I never look at catagories at all... I do a search for my keywords, one never knows where people put their auctions, so I find that the best.
I very rarely look over specific catagories, unless it is to look at closed auctions to see what sold... and for what price!

too many? well, the ones that are there are messed up. I am selling some jeans. My choice is either "vintage" or "everything else". Clothing should be its own category, not under "everything else" along with airplane parts.
Not my name on ebay.
