My wife inherited this from an Aunt, who passed away about 15 years ago. It's been hanging in our Family room since. Supposedly, it's a photo of the vessel on which my wife's Uncle served during one of the WW's. We have tried in vain to research this ship. Dept. of Navy has ship's registry, dating back to 1700's. Lists disposition of "all" Naval vessels. Frame is grey "marbleized" with pewter highlights. Glass is convex (domed). Photo itself appears to be Black & White, but color "enhanced" In lower left part of photo, the name U.S.S. Rainbow is shown. Not listed in the Naval Registry, however. Anybody familiar with this type of work? Is it possible wife's Uncle just picked this up in the local PX like a "Niagra Falls ashtray", and the vessel itself is fictional? Any help indenifying what we have here would be greatly appreciated!!!
Edited to remove the thumbnail link. Below will getcha the bigger pic, though my photographic skills require some fine tuning!

Sorry can't help you, would definately guess that the ship is turn of the century, but as far being a Naval vessel, I don't know.
You say USS Rainbow?
USS Rainbow was a Submarine Tender at the turn of the Century.

It was built in 1890 named SS Norse King as a merchant ship and carried cargo for 8 years. US Navy aquired it in 1898 and commissioned in full in 1901 as a distilling and station ship. Assigned to Asiatic Fleet and used as a submarine tender. Sold for scrap in 1928.
There is a lot more information on it. I just coied a little history for you.
I used Lycos and found http://www.ussubvetsofworldwarii.org/Rainbowhtml
