Why thank you cheryl and PM
Below is a pic of my ship. This was taken in Cahm Rhan Bay South Vietnam in Dec 1965.I was just coming back from the Bob Hope Christmas show when I took this pic.Interesting note is that Cahm Rhan Bay was a big Japanese Naval base 20 years before during the 2nd World War.

Hey, classic: That photo of yours with the rip down the center could be restored to near perfect condition. My husband even learned to do it with Photoshop, restoring old photos for our museum.

Military Rules of Engagement
Marine Corps:
1. Be courteous to everyone, friendly to no one.
2. Decide to be aggressive enough, quickly enough.
3. Have a plan.
4. Have a back-up plan, because the first one probably won't work.
5. Be polite. Be professional. But, have a plan to kill everyone you meet.
6. Do not attend a gunfight with a handgun whose caliber does not start with a "4."
7. Anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice. Ammo is cheap. Life is expensive.
8. Move away from your attacker. Distance is your friend. (Lateral & diagonal preferred.)
9. Use cover or concealment as much as possible.
10. Flank your adversary when possible. Protect yours.
11. Always cheat; always win. The only unfair fight is the one you lose.
12. In ten years nobody will remember the details of caliber, stance, or tactics. They will only remember who lived.
13. If you are not shooting, you should be communicating your intention to shoot.
Navy SEALs:
1. Look very cool in sunglasses.
2. Kill every living thing within view.
3. Adjust Speedo.
4. Check hair in mirror.
Army Rangers:
1. Walk in 50 miles wearing 75 pound rucksack while starving.
2. Locate individuals requiring killing.
3. Request permission via radio from "Higher Up" to perform killing.
4. Curse bitterly when mission is aborted.
5. Walk out 50 miles wearing a 75 pound rucksack while starving.
Army:
1. Select a new beret to wear.
2. Sew patch on right shoulder.
3. Change the color of beret you decide to wear
Air Force:
1. Have a cocktail.
2. Adjust temperature on air-conditioner.
3. See what's on HBO.
4. Ask "what's a gunfight?"
5. Request more funding from Congress with a "killer" PowerPoint presentation.
6. Wine & dine "key" Congressmen, invite DOD & defense industry executives.
7. Receive funding, set up new command and assemble assets.
8. Declare the assets "strategic" and never deploy them operationally.
9. Hurry to Ground Ordinance Launching Facility for 14:45 tee-time.
Navy Rules:
1. Go to Sea.
2. Drink Coffee.
3. Watch porn.
4. Deploy the Marines

Just got back from Arlington National Cemetery and visiting many lost friends and family members. Even got to see President Bust at the wreath ceremony while I was there.
Irked, I know the feeling. Been so long since I saw my old Army pictures I'm not sure where the heck they are. Might have to do a treasure hunt for them later this evening.

Canadian Army
"IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields."

lol I've been trying to answer that question
myself. That top pic was taken in just before I was going on liberty in Bangkok,Thailand in April 1966-I just turned 20 the month before.
Tom-thats a nice pic-are uniforms except for hats are the same.
Our ship was the U.S.S.Maury AGS16.It was a geographical survey ship in the Pacific Fleet(7th fleet)It was decommissioned in the mid-70's and replaced by the ship below sometime in the 80's.It was the U.S.S Maury AGS39.Then in the 90's was renamed the TSS Golden Bear.Practically all naval ships were painted grey for camouflage,so Im not sure why this was painted white-however it is a beautiful ship.

Tom-when I was on there we would survied the whole coast of S.Vietnam from the Mekong Delta,to the northern most city in S.Vietnam a place called Hue(pronounced "way"Besides the compliment of 450 sailers we had 10 marines and 10 professional Geographical Surveyors on board. We surveyed the depth of the water for landing craft in case they wanted to invade some part of the coast-not sure what a Survey ship would do in Antartica, but times have changed and you could be right.

I got on my ship (USCGC HAMILTON WHEC-715) right after it returned from VN...
There was a HUGE waiting list for guys wanting to get on a Coastie ship going to VN because it was such a total joke...
They took about THREE MONTHS to get there by way of:
PANAMA CANAL
JAPAN
PHILIPPINES
HONG KONG
Twas a regular PLEASURE CRUISE!
Once they arrived, they spent just under THREE MONTHS lobbing 5" SHELLS onto the VC's heads -- theey never went ashore; nor were they ever attacked by anybody...
THEN they spent another 3-4 months coming home, and once they GOT home, they got all kinds of pretty medals, etc, PLUS huge PAY BONUSES for being in a WAR ZONE...
Although the USCG suffered horrendous casualty rates (proportionally, the highest of any branch) during WWII and KOREA, the WHEC's going to VN had it pretty...cushy(??!!)

Thank YOU for the pic Tom. Appreciated.
Many wounded Vets will remember that Ship.
I became ambulatory after few weeks on that ship. Walking on the deck, A Sailor yelled out, Hey! You two.. Trash detail...Us? Two patient Marines? Yeah you.
Clear Plastic bags tied closed. BIG bags. Trash can size. Those bags were full of Arms and legs and feet. Body parts of the dying and the dead. I never forget seeing what we assumed was going to be Office paper trash. We threw the bags overboard into the South China sea. I was 19.

That must have been a pretty horrific thing for a 19 year old to have to see, Jack! Especially after having been wounded. I honestly don't think I could have handled it.
