A friend of mine just bought ten acres of land out in the country and he was telling me that there is an old mobile home, a barn and three storage sheds, all filled with stuff. He said there are old record albums, many gun type items and parts and all sorts of old stuff.

He gave me directions to his place and he told me that if I want to that I can go out and go through the MH, barn, and sheds and take whatever I want because he's just going to take it all to the dump otherwise.

I can't go tomorrow and I can't go on Monday but I think i'll go out on Tuesday or maybe Wednesday. I gotta make sure that I wear some long pants and boots, take a flashlight, a pair of gloves and a poking stick for the rattlesnakes.

I can hardly wait to see what there is. I like these kind of treasure hunts. Some people just don't know what good junk is, I guess. He knows that I sell on eBay and he said there might be some stuff that I can sell.

I'll let y'all know what I find if you wanna know.

sounds like what I've been doing all week. Really fun stuff. I don't get to keep everything, especially the really nice stuff but I am getting enough to make it worth my while. It's tiring. I should be done by tomorrow (I hope) Please let us know what you find!

yea Piin-that does sound like a "kid in a candy store" Although I dont think the snakes will go for too much on Ebay...

Although you might find some good stuff,If I knew there were rattlesnakes in there,I wouldnt be within 3 miles of the place.

Sounds like my kind of adventure, Pi! Watch out for the dreaded spiders, too. When we're on one of our trips to southern Ohio, I often daydream about exploring some of the old barns and abandoned homes we see along the way when we venture down old dirt roads. What fun!!

Be sure to post your finds here.

Aw, come on, Classic. You aren't afraid of a little old rattlesnake are you? Afterall, at least they let you know when you come to close.

Make sure your tetanus shot is up to date! Can't stress enough how important that is if you're digging in an old barn with rusty nails, metal, etc. etc.

I get one every ten years, whether I need it or not.

Good luck with your treasure hunt. If you run into any of that "gun stuff" that you can't identify you can either post some pic's here or email them to me and I will try to identify them for you. I am a avid gun collector, competitive shooter, reloader blah blah blah.

Hey! If you find any record albums that would be playable except that they are reeaally dirty or even better moldy. Let me know. I have a friend in the Seattle area that is perfecting a cleaning formula for LP's. He's had great luck with just plain dirty albums but he really wants to get his hands on a worthless because it's moldy album to test his cleaning fluid on.

Wow, MY kind of adventure. I hope you find some real treasures. Remember what you might not think is worth anything could be that elusive winner. Wish I had an old place like that to go through.

I just spent the week with my wife pulling out all the gun related items they are going to sell at auction the end of June, Gloves I stress Gloves for that recluse spider- leather is better than cloth ones too. Ya never know. Good luck and keep us posted what you find.

I'd be like a kid in a candy store......

Well thanks for all the great advice. Lets see if I gots it all. Leather gloves are better than cloth ones. Tetnus shot, i'll get one next week or the next but i'll be extra careful of rusty nails. Watch out for the dreaded spiders, ah yes I think I hate the dreaded spiders worse than rattlesnakes. Identification of old gun parts and reloading equipment, hmmm, hey Mike, here's a reload that you may want to try, 19 grains of H110 powder, a 300 grain full metal jacketed soft flat nose bullet and magnum pistol primers in a 45 Colt brass cartridge case, oh yeah I almost forgot to say that you cannot shoot this in your Cowboy Action pistols, it works best in a Winchester rifle chambered for 45 Colt. Lets see now, what else.....oh yeah, I gotta mail all the rattlesnakes to Classic. Record albums, I just hope they're not in too bad condition.

And speaking of record albums, does anyone know how to get a warp out of a record album. Normally I wouldn't worry about it but I have a Beatles album that plays a couple of different songs from what is listed on the cover and the circular disc at the center. It's not quite bad enough to keep it from playing but it does make it skip sometimes. I know it's worth alot but with the warp in it, it is worth alot less, unless I can take out the warp and flatten out the record.

Funny you should mention reloading. I'm just getting ready to load some 338 Lapua and 460 Rowland cartridges. It's been a while since I loaded any 45 Colt rounds. Here's my own favorite for use in my Ruger Blackhawk. 21.5 grains Hodgdon H110, 260 grain Speer Mag-jacketed hollow point, CCI Mag primer. This is a load I worked up and launches the 260 grain rounds at 1203 fps out of my Ruger with 10.5 inch barrel. Word of caution though, don't use this in anything but a Ruger Blackhawk or TC Contender, it will make scrap metal out of older pistols and probably swiss cheese out of your face and hand.

edited to add: Almost forgot to mention. All snake donations gladly accepted. Alway's have room for more snakes.

It was pretty well picked over by the time I got there. Two of the sheds turned out to be like chicken coops or barns/sheds. They had chicken poop all over the place and I didn't even wanna dig through that stuff.

The one shed that was worth looking in had some reloading equipment in it. A good RCBS press and several sets of dies. An old Lee Loader for 30-30 and some old reloading books. There was all kinds of reloaded ammunition but I didn't take any of it because i'm a little leary about shooting someone elses reloads, especially if I really don't know the origin of it or the person that loaded it.

There was a big box full of record albums that when I saw them, about half still had original celophane but I haven't gone through them yet.

I found a real nice small sized trunk that has a wooden tray inside. This was filled with Snap-on hand tools and they are all clean and in good condition.

Underneith a pile of garbage I found eight big boxes of old Playboy magazines from the 1950's and 60's. I've kind of gone through these a little bit but I haven't found the holy grail of Playboy issues yet.

Years ago I used to sell the ads for cars and motorcycles out of old Playboy magazines and also the Leroy Nieman artwork inserts that Playboy sometimes included with certain issues. I am hoping that there is still a market for ads and artwork from old magazines.

And there weren't even any snakes but I don't know about down at the chicken coop/sheds. It looked like perfect habitat for them there and that was another reason that I didn't wanna dig through them.

I did kind of poke around in the chicken coop with my snake stick but all I really saw was empty wooden crates, bird feeders and badly rusted and corroded tin objects all covered with poo, yeech!

Maybe I should have called in Mike Rowe from that TV show, Dirty Jobs to come in and pick through it for me and maybe for all the trouble I could have made, oh, seven dollars or so.

OMG, all that poor reloadable brass gone to waste. That's what they make bullet pullers for.

If you get a list of the reloading equipment you got and what you would like to get for it (if your going to sell it) post a list here and I'll see if there is anything I might be interested in. Would save you on febay fee's. Can never have enough reloading equipment and supplies. At last count my reloading room has 13 press's, 4 bullet swaging press's (2 hydraulic) and 8 double door metal cabinets full of supplies and other equipment. I have so much darn equipment I'm planning on building a extenssion on the house this year for a new larger reloading room. The old 12x16 room is just to darn small. I'm planning on a 24x30 room with a small 10x10 room off to the side that will be used for test firing and benchrest shooting to my backstop which is directly behind my house. Ahhh, my lifelong dream. A shooting bench in the house.

As for your Snap On tools I think you will find they do quite well on ebay. I never have a problem selling them and alway's get top dollar.

Well Darn Mike I just gave a whole bunch of stuff the auctionere of my father-in-laws estate of guns and reloading things to be auctioned off next week the 24th. But alas it was not mine to sell but my wife's and her 2 brothers. If it had been just her we would have found other way to sell than public auction on a lot of the things going. All sorts of reloading tools in the lot along with 9 colts 1st generation SAA. They are having a big gun sale with other guns than just hers so hopefully they will get what they are wanting out of them. You just can't sell sentiment though, and she is kinda sad about selling them and all the things. Guns and things her father started collecting from the 1940's up.
Here is image of just the pistols they are giving up at auction.

OMG, selling guns! That's a mortal sin isn't it? And what makes it even worse is they are family heirlooms. I shudder at the thought.

That is a nice collection of revolvers. It's ashame they didn't keep them together as a collection in the family. You should have talked them into keeping them in the family and having a once a year get together to shoot them.

Hope they find a nice home in the end though.

Yeah Mike, it is a very hard decision they made to sell them. Lot of sentimental value and memories. It has taken them 16 years to decide that. If they had kept them and split them up between the 3 of them someone would be unhappy most likely and they would love to have sold them in a group but they will most likely go separate or pairs. I just know my wife will be all upset that day next week when they go on auction. She is going to be there and probably crying her eyes out.

They also have grave doubts about passing them along to the the kids of the family, more split ups later more hard feelings on their end. SO they decided to go ahead and sell. None of us trust our kids to value these later on so thus the decision.

Mikes, I know all about bullet pullers but that's just a little too ambitious for me to pull a bunch just for the brass. Besides I have all the empty brass that I will ever need. The press and the rest of the reloading equipment I will keep except for a couple of bullet molds that I found and an old, ancient, all in one Lyman hand loader for 38 special. The old reloading books will come in handy for loads that they quit putting in newer editions. I'll be able to put the dies to some use too.

You sound alot like my dad. He has 3 rooms and part of his garage devoted to guns and reloading. He hasn't done much reloading for a long time and i've been trying to get some of his reloading equipment but he thinks alot like you I guess. He cringes at the thought of getting rid of anything gun related.

Here's a little reloading tip for ya. You gotta watch out for the Winchester pistol brass that you pick up at the range because they are loading some cartridges that would normally require large pistol primers with small pistol primers. One cartridge in particular that I know they are doing this with is 45 auto. It's still reloadable but you have to seperate it from other brass that you are reloading because it will mess up your repriming operation.
