Just got the following in my AW mailbox:
-------------------------------
To: undisclosed-recipients: ;Subject:SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT - RE: AuctionWatch Webmail Account From:[email protected] Add to Contacts
Date:Thu, Dec 21 2000 9:26:54 PM -0800 (PST)
Dear AuctionWatch Member,
Our records show that we have provided you with a free "@myauctionwatch.com" e-mail account this past year. As of February 1, 2001 we will no longer be offering this service through our website. Although this change is over a month away, we want to give you plenty of time to change the e-mail addresses you have stored with us and with partner sites such as eBay, Amazon, Yahoo and others.
We've set up a web page that will walk you through the necessary steps to ensure that both personal and auction business you conduct through your "@myauctionwatch.com" e-mail account is transitioned effectively before the cutoff date of February 1, 2001. Simply click this link http://www.auctionwatch.com/webmail/landing.html and follow the instructions. (If you are not able to click this link, simply go online and copy and paste this url into your open internet browser window).
As a courtesy, AuctionWatch.com will automatically re-direct your "@myauctionwatch.com" e-mail to the e-mail address you set as your Primary e-mail. We will re-direct e-mail from Feb 1-Mar 1, 2001.
We value your business, and will continue to provide you with powerful buyer and seller tools to enhance your auction experience.
Regards,
Chris Barker
Vice President, Customer Service
-------------------------------
I think it's a real shame. The free e-mail service here was one of AW's best features, at least from my viewpoint. I post anonymously and the e-mail system here afforded me the opportunity to communicate privately yet anonymously with other posters. Since AW has no Private Mail system -- like the one at AuctionDiner and every other OAI discussion forum I've ever been a part of -- I'm now effectively shut off to other posters, at least as far as the AW system is concerned.
Unfortunately, Chris Barker's e-mail gives no clue as to why AW is taking away this very useful feature. Maybe they're going to start charging for it. Or maybe it's only certain people whose e-mail accounts are being shut down? Notice the header -- To: undisclosed recipients -- not to mention the wording in the letter Our records show that we have provided you with a free "@myauctionwatch.com" e-mail account this past year. Barker didn't say "We have provided our membership with free e-mail accounts ..." You is very specific. Did any other "undisclosed recipients" also get this e-mail? And if it's something that affects the general membership, why didn't Chris Barker simply open one of those blue threads in each of the forums to let everyone know?

Yes Spaz I got one too. I assumed it was sent to everyone and that they posted it to the email account because there are people who probably use the email and don't visit the message boards. This way assures that you do get the message. I too, am sorry to see it end, although for different reasons than you. ):

I haven't received notice yet, but it will cause problems. I used the AW e-mail strictly for my auctions and found it easy to coordinate with the AW post-management tools. Without having AW e-mail just one click away, the effectiveness of the management tools is greatly reduced.
More worrisome, will free image-hosting be the next thing to go?

I haven't received notice yet
Thanks, Iswanson, you just confirmed what I suspected -- that e-mail was sent only to certain people, not everyone.
So AW, what's the deal? Why have only some people received this e-mail and not others?

Nope Spaz, you're not "special" anymore. I just got my notice too. I guess we beggars can't be choosers but it really was a good service.

I decided to look, and can't even find a way to get to my AW email any more. Did they completely remove it for those who have an account but don't often use it?

Can anyone recommend another free e-mail that preserves one's anonymity?

Just signed up at my-deja.com. I suspect this in the end will hurt AW since many such as myself check our e-mail frequently and then go on to the rest of the AW site.

email is gone, appraisals are gone. And now I can't seem to find the links to image hosting and counters, either.
The AuctionWatch.com Services forum no longer has areas dedicated to discussing these.

I really would like to know why AW is shutting down user e-mail services. Mark? Rodrigo? Chris Barker? Would one of you please respond?

Appraisels are definetly gone. Although it was a good idea, paying 20 bucks was a bit high. I never used my AW email anyway, so no loss for me, but for anon folks, I can see it as being a PITA not having it anymore.

Hi everyone--
I'm surprised to see such interest in our webmail product! As always thank you for the honest feedback and I will pass this on to our product team for review.
We are discontinuing webmail because it was not a widely used product. I know each of you have praise for this feature but it just didn't make business sense to continue to offer it. There are other webmail products that are free that you can use like hotmail, yahoo, or excite and I think we are giving you all plenty of notice so that the transition is a smooth one.
As far as the distribution of this email, it was sent to anyone who we could tell used the "@myauctionwatch.com" email service. We may have missed a few folks and we apologize for that.
Hope this helps clarify our decision. We look forward to better serving your auction needs in the coming year.
Please accept the AuctionWatch teams wishes for a happy holiday season.

I also feel a great loss with this service! As a post-management tool A/W had it together. This action has prompted me to look for other Auction Service Providers. The use of A/W total services has certainly been an asset to my auctions. Thank you for providing this service, but to remove one of the integral components, such as email, is a disservice.

Just an advise to AW: shutting down the AW email system can eventually bring some negative consequences to AW business in the future!!!
