NEW YORK (AP) - President Clinton and Pope John Paul II topped a poll of the man most admired by Americans, while New York Sen.-elect Hillary Rodham Clinton took the honors for most admired woman.

The president and the pope each received 6 percent of the votes in a CNN/USA Today poll of 1,000 adults, released Friday. President-elect George W. Bush and Vice President Gore followed with 5 percent.

Hillary Clinton won in a landslide with 19 percent, while talk show host Oprah Winfrey and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher tied for second with 4 percent each.

President Clinton has led the poll, conducted by Gallup, every year since 1993. Hillary Clinton has also consistently ranked high, peaking at the height of the impeachment scandal in 1998 with 28 percent of the vote

chum...does it say where they conducted this poll? My guess is New York City. Yep, 1,000 New York City residents would give you a good cross section...NOT!

It was a national poll. The more the stupid republicans bashed them, the more they are liked. The new gallup poll has their approval rating at 70%. I think its safe to say we will have another Clinton in the white house.

james...I never said New Yorkers were not real Americans. My opinion is that a small sampling in an area decidedly one party could not give a true perspective.

If you asked that same question in San Diego County, the responses would be much different. And yes, some of us approve of them...leaving as quickly as possible.

njrazd, I know you didn't say it or mean it. I was just kidding around, but you'd be surprised (I hope) that many people in this country do in fact have this hierarchy in their mind as to what makes a "real American". Somehow, the 8 million people in NYC are perceived as "alien" and "other" by many people who imagine themselves and their opinions to be the "heart of America".

Actually, if you'll read what this AP thingie says, Bill got 6% of the respondents votes, in other words, 60 people out of 1000 said he was the man they most admire. That doesn't say much about him or Americans at all. This poll may have been completely scientific, including every type of American imaginable.

Also, Bill does enjoy very high approval ratings. One thing he has shown Americans is that he's a tough #$@! and we do like our presidents to be tough. As exasperating as he might be, it's hard not to admire his toughness (even grudgingly). He took a relentless hail of fire and came out unscathed. Further, even though much of what his political enemies say about him is true, they largely succeeded in making themselves look obnoxious and overly zealous in the eyes of many Americans. When sinners cast stones at fellow sinners, the reaction from the masses is revulsion.

Clinton gets the last laugh, and it was handed to him by his enemies.

James-

By the way I like New Yorkers, the ones I have met here anyway. Never been to NY myself.

Thanks Robin.

Where do you live, by the way, if I can ask?

I'm gonna miss the heck out of President Clinton. He's brilliant, flawed, and gave the office some realism.

I might take to my bed on 1/20/2001 and never get up.

Hi Julesy, Maybe we need a communal bed. We can all get in there and wait out the next 4 together. I've got ice cream!

Hi Robin -- I'll bring the root beer...we can make floats!

Another way of looking at this....SNL is going to have a feast over President-select Smirk for the next 4.

Hey Julesy, I love root beer floats! Now all we need is some buttery popcorn and some TUMs [just in case, you never know what stomach irritating thing could happen in that 4 years] and a porta potty and we are all set!
