Can anyone tell me why timezones were created and why the central time zones is an hour earlier than everyone else?
Thanks,
Leslie

Yes, it's true! 9 a.m. in New York (Eastern Time Zone) is 8 a.m. in Central Time Zone (Chicago, etc.) is 7 a.m. in Mountain Time Zone (Denver, etc.), is 6 a.m. Pacific Time Zone (L.A.).

Leslie - I have no idea about world time zones, but seems here in the US that the railroads had a great deal of influence in establishing time zones.
Here is an interesting article:

Edited to say: Sorry, I don't know how to do a clickable link

Or how about the one oddball state that doesn't do Daylight Savings (AZ)? I can never keep up with everyone else! Sometimes L.A. is the same time as me, other times it's an hour behind. Drives me batty! (Oh wait, I already am batty )

Uh...if it's 8AM in Pensacola (Central time), how is that "earlier" than Denver (7AM) and LA (6AM)?
Maybe your clocks work differently from mine.

krs, how does that relate to batsnbeans' claim that central time zones is an hour earlier than everyone else? The last time I checked, it's NOT 8AM Central before it's 8AM Eastern.

No, of course not. It's an hour earlier (than everybody else). Jeeez.

It is an hour earlier than "everyone else" in the Central Time Zone only if "everyone else" is located in the Eastern Time Zone. This may come as a surprise to those of you who live in the Mountain and Pacific Time Zones, to say nothing of the rest of the world.
On the "won't do daylight savings time" front...I used to live in Indianapolis, which is located in the Eastern Time Zone. However, Indianapolis and the surrounding area, did not change to Eastern Daylight Time (when other folks were making the change) but stayed on Eastern Standard Time. I don't know if they still 'opt out' of Daylight Savings Time up there, but it was strange...

I think I need to clarify. Thanks to everyone on the issue. What I meant by an hour earlier was....8/7c on t.v. East and West coast watch at 8 we in the central time zone at 7
Thanks again,
Leslie

Everyone was happy using local solar time until the transportation got fast enough with trains that it became confusing what time you were going to leave and arrive at various cities. If you are riding a horse you adjust
to the local time easily. At least you don't have to worry about jet lag!
The telegraph also made time important as the time the message was sent and recieved could be very different. Wait until we have permenant settlemants on the Moon and Mars!
You will need to know if your friend there is sleeping or up before calling.
