22 Congressmen Hate Christmas

This year's "War for Christmas" – keeping "Christ" in the holiday has apparently been won. And, like many "wars," there has even been a Congressional resolution in support of keeping Christmas alive and well.

On December 15 the House of Representatives passed a resolution "protecting the symbols and traditions of Christmas" by an overwhelming 401-22 vote.

Representative JoAnn Davis (R-VA), the resolution's sponsor, said the resolution was necessary to counter "political correctness run amok."

"No one," she said, "should feel like they have done something wrong by wishing someone a Merry Christmas."

Twenty-two Democrats played Scrooge and disagreed.

Representative Robert Scott (D-VA) said Republicans were more concerned with the symbolism rather than the substance of Christmas – referring to Republican passage of a bill to slow the rate of growth in federal entitlement programs.

Davis lodged a preemptive response to critics who might question the constitutionality of her resolution.
"Celebrating Christmas is not a violation of separation of church and state," she said. "The Framers intended that the First Amendment to the Constitution would prohibit the establishment of religion, not prohibit any mention of religion or reference to God in civic dialogue."

The text of the resolution read as follows:

Whereas Christmas is a national holiday celebrated on December 25; and Whereas the Framers intended that the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States would prohibit the establishment of religion, not prohibit any mention of religion or reference to God in civic dialog:

Now, therefore be it resolved, that the House of Representatives –

(1) Recognizes the importance of the symbols and traditions of Christmas;

(2) Strongly disapproves of attempts to ban references to Christmas; and

(3) Expresses support for the use of these symbols and traditions, for those who celebrate Christmas.

As the Christmas season draws to a close, we thought we would share the names of the 22 Congressman who voted against the pro-Christmas resolution:

I think the Dems may have been objecting to a huge waste of time for a ridiculous bill which actually does nothing but make the Repugs look like pompous asses..

Have you been PERSONALLY told by ANYONE that you can't say Merry Christmas ?

Have you been forbidden to have a Christmas tree, a wreath, own a Santa suit, eat fruitcake, spend too much, work your fingers to the bone, fight with your relatives, get drunk, watch football or partake in any other Christmas tradition ?

Has anyone told you to take down the nativity scene on YOUR lawn?

Has ANYONE said you could not celebrate Christmas ?

If they did please tell us who, where, the date and any pertinent information such as ....

why did you listen to them ?????

Linda, I'm not surprised that even after you took the advice of many posters to take a rest, you still are unable to answer simple questions

You also continue, as always, to post nasty uncivil, uninformative drivel....no improvement there either.
That's OK, I never expected you to improve in anything....since you haven't in the last 50 years.

I do think your new tagline(all about me, the person you said several times you would ignore( a lie), has replaced your bushy line....too embarrased to use that anymore?

Another waste of taxpayers money by the Republicans, or perhaps they are simply trying to keep everyone's eye off the ball. This is just another attempt by Republicans to hold a religious symbol hostage in order to rally their christian base that is slowly slipping away.

Linda, you should do yourself a favor and not even posting anything to the ridiculous questions posed on you.

Hey Rusty any surprise Comrade Blumenauer is listed?

Do you say Merry Christmas in your store?

It seems a few stores are forbidden to wish their customers Merry Christmas.

With everything that has still not been dealt with in terms of actual legislation it's so refreshing to know just how many people consider it more important to impress their constituency with meanless drivel than actually doing the job they were sent to Washington to do. While I agree that a lot of political correctness on this issue has gone over the top, it's no less ridiculous than this resolution.

""Linda, you should do yourself a favor and not even posting anything to the ridiculous questions posed on you."""

I don't know what ridiculous questions were "posed on" linda. I just ask common sense questions addressing the issue and proved that there really isn't a war on Christmas.

It's kinda like "if they haven't tapped YOUR telephone what do you care".

""Hey Rusty any surprise Comrade Blumenauer is listed?""

Not if Blumenauer's got a grain of common sense.

""Do you say Merry Christmas in your store?""

Whose store?

""It seems a few stores are forbidden to wish their customers Merry Christmas.""

Yes, they are forbidden by their EMPLOYER, who wants to sell to as many people as possible, to make as much money as possible for Christmas.
My employer forbids me to swear at the CEO, be late too often, not show up for work, sleep on the job, be drunk, come to work armed.....employers have all kinds of rules for every occasion

Oh...but they ARE doing their job. They showing American's that all but those 22 dems/liberals/progressive/socialists ARE willing to stand up and protect OUR Constitutionally Protected RIGHTS.

To practice our religion without the atheists and secular American's taking those RIGHTS away from Christians.

That is NOT meaningless....it's a Constitutional RIGHT.

Happy Festivus or is it Merry Festivus.

Another waste of taxpayer money. Who the hell cares what the holiday season is called. Nobody's rights are being violated if Happy Holidays is said. It is only the Christians that are making a big deal about it. The same Christians that wanted to out law Halloween.

Perhaps Bush can listen in on people's conversations to see whether or no they say Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas. For those they say Happy Holidays will be labeled as helping the terrorists and be locked in prison for three years without being charged.

By not saying Merry Christmas their 'religious freedoms' weren't being infringed upon. They were inconvenienced - BIG deal.

I wonder how many more holidays the Christians want to monopolize.

That's NOT the point, IF you'd ever read anything. It's about being told THEY CAN'T say MERRY CHRISTMAS....or they can't mention it because it might offend someone.

It is only the Christians that are making a big deal about it.

It IS a big deal....a RIGHT guaranteed under our Constitution. You don't get to decide which Constitutional rights
don't matter.

Perhaps the Born Again Messiah - Bush - should start saying to his "base" that he will propose a Constitutional amendment outlawing "Happy Holidays" and demand everyone use Merry Christmas. To heck with the other religions.

Freedom of Speech.

People in a retail market should be allowed to greet the customers as they see fit, not the political correctness one.

I had the pleasure of leaving an entire cart of merchandise at a local discount store because the cashier refused to say Merry Christmas. Money lost by my sale, upwards of $500, the look on her face as I walked out Priceless.

But the topper was half the line did the same thing

Well, ya, if the story was true which I doubt.

Personally I think the clerk was on a power trip and obviously found it very easy, and amusing, to control the shopping habits of overly sensitive, easily controlled people

Or, maybe the clerk's employer, the entity that controls their paycheck, instructed them not to say it.

Funny, I never had a sales clerk dictate my shopping habits to me.

Don't you wish kiara.

I guess the other 3 who left with me made it a chorus

The employer had to get someone to remove the carts from the line, get someone to go around and replace all the items on the shelf. None of which is cost free to them, yeah that is some control.
Not including the pizzed off ones who had to wait while the line was cleared.

Another store was so controlling and cheerful they got my money

Oh and it is true, I knew before I went and wanted to make a little protest.

Funny that you use the word "refused" as opposed as a simple, "did not". Just how hard did you try to bully this clerk that you decided that "refused" was the proper word?

Some poor clerk goes to work and has to deal with the seasonal craze and all of the stress normally involved and you decide to pile just a little bit more crap on her day by trying to force her to say what you want her too as though she is your personal play thing.

And that type of attitude and behavior corresponds with the basics of Christianity in what was exactly?

Washingtonebayer, the other three customers were most likely in a hurry and had no time to waste when a customer in front of them throws a tantrum. Some just don't want to be involved in little scenes such as that.

Another store was so controlling and cheerful they got my money

What do you mean when you say they were 'so controlling' ? Do you like to be controlled when you go shopping? Did they also tell you what to buy?
