If the Chinese go to the moon you can be sure it will be to mine and exploit the resources - not put on a TV show and come home as if that's the end of the game. Be a shame for them to grab everything while the US is sitting with their thumb stuck in their butt using space ships with 1960's technology. It's a wonder they don't have steam powered shuttles.

Your story wouldn't come up for me, gravid, but if the Chinese want to go to the moon, I say let them! Let them all colonize it and give the rest of us on earth a break.

That's the problem with China... It's FULL of Chinese. Once they find a way to start shipping them offworld, we'll never catch up.

In hundred years or two, when the resources and space of THIS world are used up and we have to look elsewhere, maybe we can get a good lease deal from the Chinese Mars-owners.

It'll be like the old railroad-to-California days again, only WE will be the ones desperate to go to THEIR land.

We need jobs, yes. But in the long term we NEED to get up there too. This is not something that can be put off forever. If we don't get up there first, someone else will.

Yeh, this is just their first step. But do the Chinese ever do anything halfway? If they decide to invest zillions in a space program who is going to complain?

Here's the story. Its short

China Plans to Survey the Moon Within Three Years Mon October 06, 2003 09:18 AM ET

BEIJING (Reuters) - China, on the verge of its first attempt at manned space flight, said on Monday it would launch a satellite to survey the moon within three years.
"The surveying satellite will orbit the moon for a year to explore the geography, soil, environment and resources of the moon," state radio reported.

Chinese scientists had fixed the route for the surveying satellite and it would take eight or nine days to put it into orbit, the report said. It gave no further details.

The latest pronouncement on Beijing's bid to conquer space comes as China prepares to become just the third country to put a person into orbit, after the United States and former Soviet Union.

The manned space program is shrouded in secrecy, with speculation a launch could come during the week-long October 1 National Day holidays, which wind up on Tuesday, or later in the month.

Chinese space officials have hinted they are pursuing a multi-pronged human spaceflight program, including space station construction, as well as eventual travel to the Moon, all by 2020.

I realize why they 'shroud this all in secrecy' ..... they've failed a lot in this area, one time televising the thing, while the rocket slammed into a village an killed the entire population. So they do not televise, nor let the population know they are launching anything

"It's a wonder they don't have steam powered shuttles."

I bet you thought that was a joke.

Have you read about the Ion Engine that powers the recently launched European Moon Probe? Steam powered is not a bad description- It's incredibly slow, but it's also very cheap.

I think the space program should be privatized. A Pizza Hut billboard on the moon would be pretty cool.

Well, if there are any resources to exploit or anything to grab, you can count on Bechtel, Boeing and all the U.S.corporations being there, controlling the earth. Did the Chinese ask permission to travel in Bush's space?
